What is it about City Sub? For all intents and purposes, it's just a sandwich shop, slicing Boar's Head meats and cheese to order paper-thin and topping them with lettuce, tomato, or pickles, hot peppers, and olives if you like. They're not roasting fresh turkey in house or hand slicing prosciutto. There are no farmstead cheeses, either; they're planted firmly in the pre-artisanal days of Brooklyn. Yet there's something about these sandwiches that make them some of the best in the entire city.
The shop, located on Bergen Street just east of Fifth Avenue (a few doors down from the Main Street that Pintchik's created), turns out expertly made sandwiches with ruthless efficiency, even though the line stretches out the door every day during lunchtime. Sandwich combos are posted in bold lettering, the most popular options being #24 (chicken cutlet with ham and mozzarella), #4 (pastrami with melted provolone), #14 (honey glazed turkey breast with muenster cheese), and #18 (Cajun-style eye round roast beef with pepper jack), above. The meat/cheese/bread/topping ratio is always spot-on.
Sandwiches are available either hot or cold, and if you order it hot the theatrics behind the process are wild. The bread is toasted in a traditional toaster oven as the toppings are prepared and cheese melted on top in the microwave, then using special tongs the whole shebang is assembled, again with well-rehearsed efficiency.
But the real hero of City Sub is the bread, brought in fresh every morning. They've been using the same local Brooklyn baker (the Carroll Gardens institution Mazzola Bakery) since opening nearly 25 years ago, and it's soft and squishy and just crusty enough (moreso when toasted), and topped with sesame seeds. I'll go out on a limb and say that it's the perfect sandwich bread.
Just make sure you get there early; when the bread is gone, the shop is closed.

You know, I've lived here for over 20 years and never went there. To me, it's just another deli/sandwich shop. Like you said, they are just slicing boar's head cold cuts! But, people seem to rave about them, gonna have to try it one day
PSP, trust me they are good sandwiches. I resisted going for a long time too, but I finally went last year and it's delicious.
Having said that, that new place Zito's on 7th Avenue is MUCH much better!
Don't waste your time with CitySub and go try Zito's if you haven't already. They are more old school Brooklyn style meats and cheese kinda place.
I just had Zito's for lunch, lol!! Eggplant parm and part of a rice ball, yum!
Many places can make a decent sandwich if they use "decent" quality meat and take the time to slice thin, pile generously and garnish well. Eagle Provisions... still a great sandwich at a very reasonable price. i am sure there are many Bodegas in the Hood that fulfill these (actually) minimal requirements.
