161 Wine Bar Closed "For Renovations," Probably For Good
Thursday, November 10, 2024 at 11:17AM
UPDATE: Many thanks to the commenters for pointing out that the entire building is for sale, for $4M. According to the listing, it "can be delivered with two vacant commercial and residential units" (assumed to be the wine bar and the shuttered Chickadee Chick next door), and the "non-landmarked building has additional air rights." I don't like the sound of that.
Thanks to a tipster for forwarding along the above photo. It appears as if 161 Wine Bar, which opened a little under two years ago on the corner of Seventh and Garfield, has closed for some "renovations."
I could always be proven wrong, but my money is on this place never re-opening. Not only is their phone disconnected (never a good sign), the place simply wasn't very good, in my (and many Yelp reviewers') opinion. The one time I went, service was very spotty, food was so-so, and the kitchen was confused and slow (even though there was only one other party there). Also, the menu kept changing but never seemed to hit the right notes, and...sushi? At a wine bar? The wine selection wasn't bad, though, so I hope the sommelier can find a place that makes him happy.
Stay tuned...

This is too bad. I liked Mike (is that right?) a lot, very friendly and informative. I went frequently at first, but after moving a few blocks away my visits dwindled. I loved to see it packed because they definitely had their hearts in the right place but hated to see when the traffic dwindled. I wish them all the best.
That entire building was or is still for sale. I saw the listing recently, I think for 4.5 million (something like that). They've also left Chickadee Chick or whatever it was called empty and I believe I recall the listing saying that the buildings commercial tenants could be delivered vacant which means Rancho Allegro could also be leaving. I believe those are the three retail tenants in there. I'll try to find the listing if I can.
Also, why do these places say closed for renovations and then never reopen? Sounds really sketchy to me. If a store is lying to their customers about that, what else do they lie about?
The Listing is

okay, I was mostly right. says can be delivered with two vacant storefronts and now there are two.
i had forgotten that pita pan was also part of this building.
oh sorry, hadn't seen that you already posted it maryanne.
Personally, I still miss Fujisan, wish they were still around. And, yeah, not liking that 'air rights" comments either
I also REALLY miss Fujisan! Their staff was so nice, ESPECIALLY Stanley (RIP) who manned the takeout section for soooo many years!
What, then, of MOIM? Is it also in danger?
Moim is not part of that building and hope it's going nowhere as it's a good place!
I am REALLY EXCITED!!! that the building is for sale. Maybe we can have a few more BARS!!! NAIL SALONS!!! REAL ESTATE OFFICES!!! on Seventh Ave.
An honest-to-goodness bar on that stretch of Seventh wouldn't be such a bad thing.
An honest to goodness BBQ place would be perfect where chickadee chick was because they often need to vent the smoke somewhere and since it's a single story, it could be possible there.
And yes, a bar would be great too along here somewhere.
I wish the Thistle Hill guys would take over this entire place actually and turn it into something good.
I was trying to think of an honest to goodness stand alone bar on 7th avenue and other than Carriage house, couldn't come up with any! When i first moved here many moons ago, there were quite a few bars to choose from on 7th, including the original Mooney's (last home to Super Savers)
@parkslopeperson Don't forget about Bar 4!
That's the truth about the bar situation on 7th, and the Carriage House...well let's just say it doesn't fit everyone's bill. I spent two years up there and always walked down to fifth for a pint. Foodie, you're still right about that BBQ joint, a la Fette Sau, could totally work on seventh. Who knows when, and if, this building will sell but there's still the Sette space to be filled. Fingers crossed.
Foodie and Justin--
Moim ain't goin nowheres. We have our own building, so we're not tied to the comings and goings of all the restaurants in that grid (Pita Pan, the Chicken Place and 161 were all part of it).
Glad to see we have fans on this site.
Oh...come in for a drink n' dumplings some time and say hello. Mention this site so I know who you are...
