Open For Business: De Luxe Cafe, 410 Seventh Avenue

Owners Andy and Tina Schultz

Who says that mom and pop shops aren't alive and well in Park Slope? A new cafe called De Luxe soft opened this morning on Seventh Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets, run by the husband-and-wife team of Andy and Tina Schultz, and they're serving up some high quality brew along with baked goods and snacks from some of the city's best purveyors.

Under construction since back in July, the cafe (which is serving all their menu items free of charge until the end of the day) is a labor of love for Andy and Tina, who live in Brooklyn Heights but decided to open up in the Slope because they were unable to find "that neighborhood vibe" anywhere else. "We just fell in love with the area, and knew we had to open here as soon as we found the space," said Tina. "We signed the lease the next day."

So what's on offer? There's a house drip along with a couple single origin selections from roaster Doma Coffee ($1.75 for a small, $2.25 for a large), as well as teas, lattes, and hot chocolate. To eat, they've assembled a fine menu, with selections including breads and croissants from Balthazar, coffee cake from This Chick Bakes, spicy chocolate chip and cardamom cookies from HIM in the Kitchen, and other baked goods from Fats & Flour. Pickles are from Brooklyn Brine, and jams to go along with the bread are from Anarchy in a Jar. There are also several sandwiches on offer, like hot sopressata (from Caputo's on Court Street) with fresh mozzarella, cherry peppers, and arugula. Some items, like the ricotta and hummus, are made in-house. It's clear that they've really gone out of their way to provide some top notch eats, taking advantage of all the passionate small producers that have popped up around here recently.

The space itself is small but nicely appointed, letting in plenty of natural light, and good classic rock on the radio adds to the laid-back atmosphere. Andy and Tina are friendly, welcoming hosts, and thankfully leave all holier-than-thou attitude at the door. It's just a little neighborhood coffee shop, run by and for people who like good food, good coffee, and a pretension-free place to hang out.

De Luxe Cafe, 410 Seventh Avenue Brooklyn NY 11215. 718-369-0601.

Sounds cute, what is the cross street?

Wait, everything is free today? Why didn't you alert us this morning!! hahahha

Looking in on PS from the outside, it's probably hard to argue that anything in PS could even be pretension-free by design of the residents (myself included), but personally I'd say Naidre's, Couleur, Parco and Grumpy are pretty pretension free as well.

Balthazar is pretentious, by the way. But their croissants are great!

LOL, good point Dave!!!

The cross streets are 13th and 14th Streets.

This place looks cute and all, but with all the places Dave mentioned within two blocks (not to mention Bagel Hole and Purity--talk about pretension-free!) to get coffee and breakfast, what's the point? Isn't the market a bit saturated? Now, the decent-coffee-and-pastry story on 5th Ave. in the teens is much different. We've got nothing between Regular (at 11th) and Roots (b/w 18th & 19th).

@ Lindsay: I don't think the market is saturated. Really, there are no good sit-down coffee shops in the area. Naidre's has mediocre coffee, and is not a good atmosphere; Couleur is ok, but always has felt a little unwelcoming to me--and it tilts more toward the restaurant end of things, making coffee just something that's available there; Parco has bad coffee, and there's nowhere to sit; Grumpy has great coffee, but there's very limited seating, and you are discouraged from staying long. The only real competition is Red Horse, which is great for long sits but has horrendously bad coffee. Southside coffee has great coffee but is too far south, and has communist-era décor. The other option is the coffee people who take up Sweetwolf (is that the name? keep forgetting, probably cause it's not a great one) on 6th and 12th or 13th. But their hours are limited; more important, I had coffee twice from there, and it's been surprisingly mediocre both times.

So, in sum, I think Deluxe could do well. Very cute inside, coffee is great, people are nice.

@ Lindsay......... Forty Weight Cafe inside Sweetwolf's is open from 7am-4pm, 7 days a week. How is that limited hours?

It's not horrible hours, but I know I'm not alone in liking coffee in the later afternoon, after 4 or so. I went in there the other day at like 3.30 and couldn't get coffee. I think it's fair to call that "limited"--again, not horrible, but clearly not the same as being open from 6.30 to 7pm.

I hear you LIndsay. I'm surprised to hear that you didn't like the coffee; most people seem to be freaking out for it.

Went there this morning for breakfast.

The owners were really sweet people and made for a nice atmosphere.

The coffee was good (I like Couleur, Naidres, Parco, etc; I find Grumpy's too expensive). The pastries were good.

I hope they survive.
If every block can support a nail salon, why not a coffee shop too. Everyone drinks coffee, so maybe it will work out for them.

They also has some other interesting items (unique flavor combinations in their jams, some interesting cookies, etc).

And it was well priced.

Stopped in this morning, great vibe, the owners were super friendly and made me a perfect cortado. I'll definitely be hanging out here on lazy weekend mornings. With like 10,000 people in a 10-block radius, not to mention really excellent coffee, I think they'll be just fine!
