Los Pollitos II Seized By Taxman

In better days

Many thanks to a tipster for pointing out that Los Pollitos II, the Mexican restaurant on the corner of Fifth and Douglass, was shut down by the city over the weekend.

The restaurant, best known for its straightforward Mexican offerings, rotisserie chicken, and killer margaritas, got the hammer after some city officials dropped by, pasted the infamous "SEIZED" sign to the front windows, and made the staff clear out and roll the gates down.

As of today, it's still closed, even though they've taken the signs down. Considering the amount of money they put into a renovation back in March, it's surprising that they couldn't scrounge up some extra cash to pay back taxes.

Another chapter in the bizzare family feud that involves that whole series of restaurants. Just go down the street to El Pollito Mexicano for your questionnable Mexican needs.

They got Oshima on Seventh Avenue, too.

I didn't know people actually ate there. Tried it once, worst Mexican around. Oh, besides Mezcals.

They don't seize your restaurant if you owe $23.55.
They must have owed thousands, if not tens of thousands.
They must have received a dozen demands for payments.
Their lawyer must have tried to settle the debt.
You don't scrounge up that much money if your joint is failing.

Then why not close the doors instead of hoping desperately for some sudden boom in business? Why let it get this point?

Frankly, I loved the food there, as did every guest I ever brought there,
(I would say their specials were much better than the standard fare on the menu though.)

I figured that the only reason people ate there was because the drinks were decent and strong and got one so drunk that you didn't realize how bad the food was.

Fonda is about 1,000,000 times better than this place.

The rotisserie chicken and pico de gallo there were pretty great for the price and quick delivery, I'm really hoping they reopen soon...

I tried this place for the first time a couple weeks ago. Got steak tacos and chorizo tacos to go, so I can't comment on the drinks. The tacos were actually decent, especially the chorizo ones. I'm not comparing them to Sunset Park or Red Hook versions, by any means, but at least they were crumbled, crispy, and tasty. If anybody knows of another Mexican joint in Park Slope that serves crumbled chorizo tacos, I'd be excited to hear about it.

Oshima was back open last night! The owners are lovely and the sushi is IMO the neighborhood's best, so here's hoping they'll make it through whatever difficulty they've been facing.

Oshima is great, I agree. So happy to hear they are back open. The owners are some of the nicest people around.

I would not say Oshima is better than Blue Ribbon, however. Much more reasonably priced, though. I've also found Taro to be very good.

I am not gonna lie, I ordered this chicken a couple times a week. It was wonderful. I really hope they figure this tax issue out and hire a decent manager to make this place profitable.

Every time I ordered it was the same disorganization and problems. However the chicken would suck me back in. I hope they get it together.

Im soo glad they've reopened. They do have killer Margaritas and their food is superb given their low menu price. Fonda is too expensive for my taste. I'll stick with authentic homemade Mexican
