After 39 Years, City Casuals to Shutter February 28th
Monday, February 21, 2011 at 12:09PM City Casuals, the "working woman's store" located at 223 Seventh Avenue (between Third and Fourth Streets), will be closing its doors for good next Monday after an astonishing thirty-nine years in business. Owner Esther Levitt has decided to retire, and there's a going out of business sale advertised in the windows.
The store first opened in 1972, selling handmade shoes. A few years later they added fashionable clothing designed for women to wear into the workplace, as well as outfits for special occasions. It's one of the oldest boutiques in the neighborhood (if not the oldest), which is quite an accomplishment. They weren't forced out because of growing rents or an aggressive landlord or anything along those lines; business hadn't even slowed. Levitt just decided that now is the right time to retire.
