Uncle Barry's Bar Coming to 58 Fifth Avenue in the North Slope

The far north end of Fifth Avenue is about to get one more bar. This one, called Uncle Barry's, will be opening by November in the space between St. Marks and Bergen last occupied by garish clothing store New Style, and before that Flight 001.

The corner of Fifth and Bergen has become one of the major nightlife hotspots in the borough, with no less than 5 bars (Black Sheep, Cyprus Avenue, O'Connor's, Wolf and Deer, and Alchemy) within a two-block radius.

I had a chat with Uncle Barry's owners, Josh Ellis and his cousin Jake Treback, earlier today, and it's clear that they welcome the competition.

"I've worked at just about every bar in the area, and the guys at Pacific Standard and 4th Avenue Pub are really my mentors," said Treback, who lives right around the corner. "We're going to be a low-key, unpretentious neighborhood bar with a good happy hour, low lighting, and cheap, quality beer. Somewhere between O'Connor's and Wolf and Deer."

"There'll be a 30-foot long bar, with 18-20 taps and as many bottles," added Ellis. "We'll specialize in craft beer, mostly Belgians and Belgian-style, with some snacks like meat and cheese, and beer nuts."

It's clear that Ellis and Treback love this neighborhood and are very excited to provide residents with a new hangout. The main room will be simply appointed with the long bar and some tables, and a back room will have a couple arcade games. There's a small backyard where they plan on having more seating, and firing up the grill on occasion.

"We know that the arena's getting built up the street, but we want this to be first and foremost a neighborhood hangout," said Ellis. "We'll be open for a year before the arena, so that's really not even on our radar right now."

And who's Uncle Barry? Treback's father, and Ellis' uncle. "We're keeping it all in the family," added Treback.

Uncle Barry's, 58 Fifth Avenue Brooklyn NY 11217.
