Barrio Re-Opens With New Name, New Menu, New Look

Barrio re-opened on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Third Street yesterday after being closed for about a month, and they've debuted essentially an entire new restaurant. The interior got a major overhaul, the old menu has been ditched in favor of a completely different, small-plates oriented one, and they've scratched "Barrio" entirely from their name.

Now known as Mix, the restaurant, with new head chef Martell Fonville (who cut his teeth at Gramercy Tavern, A Voce, and al di la), serves an eclectic array of dishes that span the globe. The menu is divided into Farm, Sea, Land, and Sweet sections, and indicates that the dishes "are designed for sharing and are brought to the table steadily and continuously throughout the meal." Not exactly a novel idea, but it could certainly work.

He finally wised-up. A full on refresh in concept and name will give them a better shot at success. We shall see, a lot of new places to try before I get to this.

Is that the interior of a Cracker Barrel restaurant?

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBully

Cracker Barrel? That looks NOTHING like the inside of a Cracker Barrel. BTW, poor timing since the guy who started CB died yesterday.

Agree that a name chance was KEY! I think they'll do okay but I also have way too many places to try before this one.

Well, they kept the watermelon margarita, but the rest fo the menu sounds like "ideas other places will probably do better." With this, Woodland, and Carlton Park, I have a feeling we're about to be unleashed with one too many middle-of-the-road attempts at "seasonal" already done better by other longtime places in the neighborhood. Let's hope one of these proves me wrong.

The food still tastes like ASS!!

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpsbklyn

Not as bad as the food at PSBrooklyn! That was officially THE WORST food in the hood!

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeanstreet

I went there yesterday and almost THREW UP! food was aweful

I sincerely doubt the poster had anything to do with actual PSBklyn restaurant, but wouldn't it be the most pot/kettle situation EVER if they did?

Also, if it looked like an actual Cracker Barrel, you'd have that little mindbender game on every table.

Yes, I agree I threw up when I ate at PSBrooklyn too!

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeanstreet

I didn't throw up at Psbklyn, but I paid the same I would for a burger there than I would have at the Spotted Pig. Riddle me that one.

I love the new look. Although there's nothing new with the menu. :)

The haters are on the loose here. How about giving the place a few days to find its footing? There are more than a few interesting concepts on that menu. However, the problem inherent in any small plates restaurant is cost: if two people want to satisfy an appetite and have something to drink, they're certainly going to drop $100 or more here. For that money, it had better be good...or I'm heading to Al di La, Applewood, Franny's or any of a number of other places where $100 buys you a fabulous meal.

Secondary question: Barrio participated in savored and one or two other groupon-wannabees, making it a bit more palatable, costwise. Will Mix do the same?

The haters aren't on the loose. Rothschild gave the neighborhood two mediocre concepts. One fell flat on its face and was downright awful. The other seemed to be doing somewhat less than average business before the complete revamp. You must forgive if there's going to be a bit of trepidation before giving his Slope offerings another shot.

The comments on this blog have deteriorated into a sort of hipster, vulgar version of the Republican debates. Why call yourselves Mick, psbklyn, etc.? Just call yourselves Newt, Mitt, etc.

Sure thing, Dr. Paul. Now about those newsletters....
