Fort Reno Provisions Bringing "Barbecue and Cocktails" to Fourth and Union

I hope you're sitting down: Barbecue is coming to Park Slope. And it's coming soon.

"Meats, cocktails, and other sundries" will be on offer at Fort Reno Provisions, opening within a couple weeks in the space that was last home to Mama Rosa Latin Bistro, at 669 Union Street, just east of Fourth Avenue.

Information about the restaurant, which has been quietly under construction for months, has been tough to come by, but a visit yesterday afternoon introduced me to co-owner Anthony Laudato, a producer for CBS News who also happens to be a barbecue virtuoso. He's partnered with Palo Santo's Jacques Gautier and Lia Forman to open the Slope's first full-fledged barbecue restaurant since Lookout Hill closed back in 2008.

Judging by a couple photos that have been posted to their Facebook page, we could be in for a real treat here, folks. Above are the pork spare ribs with a bourbon barbecue sauce, slow cooked collards, and a buttermilk biscuit. Look at that bark! Yes, please.

Meat is provided by Heritage Foods, and it looks like smoked brisket will be another offering to come out of the custom-built smoke pit. They'll deliver, and there's a chance that they could be open as soon as this weekend.

Now THIS is exciting. We need some good smoked bbq around here. I'll be checking it out, for sure.

I would love to get excited about this, but my heart has been broken so many times already by promises of good BBQ in Park Slope. I will certainly give them a try when they open, but I'm going to hold off on declaring this the best news ever until I give it a try.

Agree with Parksloper. You get a lot more bad BBQ than good. Wait and see with this one.

I know one of owners and he is a BBQ maestro. Park Slope is in for a treat.

Love BBQ, and will definitely try this place. but, those portions look teeny tiny!

I'm hearing more good things about the owners, but price will be key here. That photo above shows me two ribs and a whole lotta veg.

Small portions? You are supposed to eat a meal the size of your fist and this looks like 3 FISTS to me!

It's only a small portion if you're 300lbs.

Americans....SMH....

Palo Santo: Positively and absolutely the most overrated restaurant in this neighborhood, even moreso than Miriam.

I actually think that, as a society, we are ready for a BBQ restaurant that serves modest portions. Seriously - the amount of meat some BBQ joints put on the plate can make me sick.

Agree that price will be a factor, but for me, quality will be even more important.

Agree with you there, Mick. I was there recently. Forgettable.

Definitely quality over quantity. This country is now 35% OBESE! We are the laughing stock from those overseas for being dimwitted FATSO's!

Yes, there are some Americans who like large portions of barbecue, myself among them. It can be so damn good that a half slab just won't do. So sue me.

Regarding the photo; 'Cue does not belong on top of, or "elevated" above, other food items (unless it's to-go and the styro clamshell just ain't big enough). That's trying to take it to some chichi level at which it does not belong. It's fine on it's own, as are the sides.

And is that sauce CHUNKY?!?!

This does not bode well, y'all...

My point wasn't that the plate shown above isn't enough food for one serving, just that it be priced correctly. That plate, for $12? Sure, anytime. For $22? Nope.

I'm just hoping taht the prices are reasonable and they don't shoot for some highbrow, upscale (expensive) approach to BBQ.

Yes, small portions! When I go out to eat and spend a good amount of money, which I assume this will be. I expect more than 2 ribs on the plate and some veggies. And, I am far from 300 lbs., but, come on, that is not a dinner size plate by any standards, and I do not eat huge meals

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterParkSlopePerson

Who said that was a dinner plate? The place isn't even open yet, they put a couple things on a plate to put up on their facebook wall and the ParkSlopePerson is ALREADY COMPLAINING???

Why don't you wait and see what their dinner plate looks like when the place actually opens instead of doing what you normally do and bad mouth every single thing that people put their hard earned money into. If you need more food than they offer, do elsewhere...their business is not hinging on the negative nancies of the neighborhood.

I just walked by and this place was rocking! I wonder if it was some type of preview party. I really wanted to stop in.
