Dinosaur Barbecue Coming to Union Street Near Fourth Avenue(!)

When it rains, it POURS, folks! Ben Popken Writes is reporting that an outpost of the beloved Dinosaur Barbecue, based up in Syracuse but also a hit in Harlem, will be opening up at 604 Union Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues. Yep, that's a block away from Fort Reno Provisions, a barbecue restaurant from the owner of Palo Santo that's slated to open next week.

This space, which was previously home to Perfect Metals, is massive, and is sure to become a destination unto itself. While it's technically in Gowanus, it's just steps away from the Slope as well as walking distance from the Barclays Center. Dinosaur launched in 1988, and over the years their insanely delicious barbecue has found its way to Rochester, Troy, and Harlem. It's a thing of fierce devotion for its loyalists, and I foresee some tensions between this place and the (much) smaller Fort Reno, which will essentially be right across the street.

Fort Reno Owner Jacques Gautier doesn't, however, and neither does Dinosaur spokesman John Fink. "I think we will have a very different appeal,” Gautier told the blog. “Fort Reno will be a small neighborhood joint. Dinosaur is a huge chain restaurant.”

"There’s plenty of room. We’re not afraid of competition,” Fink added. “It creates a district, an energy, a vibe,” he added. “All boats rise in a high tide.”

They've applied for a liquor license, and the hearing will be held at 6:30 pm on January 23, at 65 Sixth Avenue.

Not good news for reno provisions as Dinosaur has a cult following and is some of the best damn BBQ you can eat. With the two a block from each other, I would always choose Dinosaur because it's that good. Too bad reno can't move itself up the hill cause they could have done great on 7th Avenue. More of the heritage foods crowd up there.
This is BEYOND EXCITING NEWS!!!

Fort Reno better not try to kid themselves about Dino BBQ being a "big chain restaurant". While they're a chain, they're a NY based chain with few locations and great quality.

This is great news. This place is going to make a killing.

So exciting! I keep a bottle of Dinosaur BBQ sauce in my fridge pretty much all the time. So I KNOW I will be going here.

Fort Reno is shitting themselves, no doubt. Either that or they aren't very smart if they don't realize how crazy people are for Dinosaur. It really is a shame they are so close. Park Slope is a big neighborhood and if they had taken over that space on 7th where the wine bar/chickadee chick place they could have made a killing, but now they are gunna be screwed because when Park Slopers walk all the way down to 4th avenue for BBQ, they are going to go to Dinosaur. Trust me.

It will most likely be months before Dinosaur opens, so at least Fort Reno will have a good head start.

"best damn bbq you can eat"

I think not.

I have never had a better BBQ in the state of New York.

How's that?

Of course I've had Kansas City BBQ and it's great, but Dinosaur is no slouch.

Don't be a curmudgeon.

I just wish they'd stop telling everyone that they're (Fort Reno Provisions) affiliated with Palo Santo. Most people I know do not like Palo Santo so every time it's mentioned in a blog it makes me want to go there less and less. It is not something to advertise. Palo Santo is mediocre on a good day. I hope they are able to carve out a niche before the almighty Dinosaur opens.

RIP Fort Reno.

This is HUGE. Pretty much the BBQ I'll ever go back and eat is at Dinosaur. Their heart and their politics are in the right place as well. A major, major win for the neighborhood.

Deanstreet: Palo Santo is awful. Terrible service, and bland, lazy cooking that they think they're going to get by with by just calling it "rustic." Never had anything I enjoyed there.

How restaurants like Palo Santo and Miriam continue to be lauded in this neighborhood is a massive mystery.

It's a shame Dinosaur isn't moving into the PSBklyn space. That would be an ideal tenant for that space. Looks like their Gowanus warehouse will be larger (and also closer to a subway) though.

never heard of this place, but after reading all of this, i am excited!

That Psbrooklyn space isn't nearly large enough for Dinosaur BBQ. Have you been to their location in Harlem??

Someone like Mario Batali should take over the PSBrooklyn space and turn it into something like Lupa. Or maybe someone should open an awesome Dim Sum place there. Or an excellent sit down Vietnamese place (the one on 9th sucks). It needs to be something with a little bit of star power or something that's trendy.

reno will benefit from the overflow of dinosaur on busy nights

I feel bad for them. Everyone was so excited about BBQ coming to the neighborhood and now Dinosaur totally trumped them and are opening a block away. I don't feel bad that the neighborhood is about to get some unbelieveble BBQ though, just feel like those Fort Reno guys must be a bit sullen after this news.

I LOVE PORK!

I'm not a curmudgeon; I grew up around barbecue and know it well.

Tell us where there is better BBQ in Brooklyn then? Please don't say Fette Sau, that place is good but overrated wildly.

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeanstreet

Psbklyn space would be big enough for Dinosaur if they used the bottom level for seating as well. Probably not the ramshackle kinda spot they'd get with Gowanus, though.

Psbklyn space for Shake Shack! :)

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMick

I feel as though maybe Shack Shack is going to open where the blockbuster was on Flatbush next to the new Weight Watchers. SOMETHING is happening in there!

Wishful thinking for a Grand Army Plaza Shack Shack, i guess.

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeanstreet

okay nevermind, Blockbuster is becoming a new Franny's, not Shake Shack. Franny's is much better and quite honestly the best news of all, if you ask me.

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeanstreet

Is Franny's really moving into that spot? What's your source on that?

January 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJimbo

I also heard Franny's moving intop that spot.....A close friend of mine told me

"I'm not a curmudgeon; I grew up around barbecue and know it well."

Dinosaur is on par with the best BBQ being served anywhere. Sure different people have different preferences, but I'd love to hear somebody argue what about Dinosaur lacks.

As a PS business owner myself, I feel beyond bad for the guys over at Reno. I can imagine the feeling in their stomachs :-(
