Mamco Electronics to Close Next Month

There are three things that I especially like about Mamco, the little camera/iPod/etc. shop on Fifth Avenue just south of Ninth Street. One, the giant Pikachu standing guard at the entrance; two, it sits on the same spot as the old railcar-style Fifth Avenue Diner; and three, the name itself almost sounds like some novelty company made up for a cartoon.

Either way, the "For Rent" sign has gone up, and the owner told me that a combination of dwindling sales and high rent will force its closure by the end of February. When I told him I was sad to see it go, he replied simply, "Me too."

Damn. I love this store. They always have good inventory. Friendly sales staff. It's a shame.

I can hardly wait for yet another: (i) burger place; (ii) phone store; (iii) uninspired restaurants/lounge/bar; or (iv) dry cleaner.

Not sure why you say that, AMV since the last openings we've heard about on this blog are two new BBQ places, a new Franny's, a great new concept where Franny's was, a new health food restaurant on 5th, a new english pub and quite a few other things that are none of the above you mention.

I haven't heard about a new dry cleaner or phone store opening in ages around here. what's with the negativity?

My kids are going to miss that big Pikachu out front, they love that thing

deanstret, it's because it's pretty sickening to see the same old junk opening in space after space. All the new openings are boring because they are all B.S. How many coffee & burger places does one need? Retail stinks.
