"Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu" Coming to Tower Electronics Space

The eyesore that's dominated the corner of Fifth Avenue and 13th Street, the shell of the former Tower Electronics, will thankfully be getting a new tenant: The Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a "self defense, fitness, confidence, team building training academy."

Tower, a giant electronics and appliances store, shuttered last year and the sign fell off during the hurricane, leaving a depressing, gaping hole in the streetscape. Last week some temporary signage went up for the academy, which should be open within a couple months. According to their Facebook page, they'll host three classes: one for adults, one for teens 13-16, and one for juniors 8-12.

Here's their mission statement:

"At the Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we are always striving to reach new goals, for ourselves, and the rest of the team. You work hard in a safe and respectful environment. We believe that the study of martial arts is a vehicle to positive growth. This training not only benefits you but those around us."

It should be noted that a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school already exists right across the street at the Amerikick.

This is a dedicated JIu-Jitsu school with classes five nights a week, different than Amerikick TKD school with two nights of JIu-JItsu,

Can't wait for this place to open. Im currently a blue belt (going on to purple belt soon) in bjj and i have been waiting for a dedicated Bjj school with high level instructors near park slope. Amerikick is a great dojo for TKD but from what i have seen their Bjj is not at the same level as other Bjj schools I've been too. Plus i need more than just 2 classes of Bjj In a week.

January 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFuture Red Belt

I know both schools and not to "knock" anyone, but Alex at Amerikick is more than qualified to teach and train BJJ students. So if interested, I would check out both schools and don't be fooled by the "BJJ" label. GO where you feel more comfortable, by taking class, not by promises and good sales.

For the record, I am not affiliated with any of the schools in question, I only seek to provide information so that anyone seeking to study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Park Slope can make an informed decision. There is another BJJ school opening in Park Slope to be run by Renzo Gracie black belt John Finn (check www.parkslopebjj.com for more info). To my knowledge the instructors at both Amerikick and this new school Park Slope Academy of BJJ are all purple belts. Now certainly there are several factors to consider when choosing a school. That being said, anyone serious about learning BJJ will seek out the most qualified instructor available to them, and in this case the choice is clear. Why learn from purple belts when you have a legitimate black belt available? Hope this helps

Hello Park Slope,

I was emailed this awesome write up and we are super excited to join the community.
We are looking for a student who wants to train 2-3 times a week with flexible hours and multiple instructors. The school is for adults primarily who are interested in self defense, fitness, and appreciation of the martial arts. Come by and say hi all are welcome!
There seems to be a bit of confusion because of Amerikick Karate School, we love those guys. Both Sensei Alex and and Sensei Vlad have trained with us for several years under the same instructor. Also we love their jiujitsu instructor Mr Christian who holds a higher rank in BJJ than Sensei Alex was my student whenever he trainined at Bay Parkway the school I use to teach at. As for ranking that doesnt matter because the Amerikick instructors are great regardless of their belts.
As for the ghostwriter who googled John Finn, he teaches teens in New Jersey, his school was suppose to open last year but never came to fruition.
With that being said we are happy to have the largest mat space of any style of martial arts in Brookyn West East and North. We have nothing but repsect for both Sensei Davydovs and wish them continued success in helping the community.
Park Slope is an large diverse community and we are focused on our adult and teen students. Different focuses, different schools, different people.... this was an article to spotlight that old electronics store coming down. It seems to have gotten way off tangent.
Regardless we would love the entire world to train in the martial arts if not Bjj, then muay thai, or karate, or judo, or sambo, or wing chun or whatever.

Professor Steven Crocilla

I agree with Steven, everyone should train in the martial arts, especially BJJ. I just want to make sure that they train under qualified instructors, not just salesmen who call themselves "Professor". By calling yourself "professor" you make a mockery of everyone that actually deserves the title. Please stop, for the sake of all true martial artists.

January 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterI love BJJ

So tell me "Professor" Crochet I mean Crocilla, How does one go about getting the title of Professor at the Purple Belt level? Isn't that a little presumptuous? I mean, even coming from LandMark Forum BJJ that's still a little quick to be calling one's self Professor...

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter"Professor" In Training

Black Belts get the title of professor not purple belts they get the title of instructor. I know Alex and he has ran his school for a # of years and is a very good instructor and doesnt presume to call himself Professor. Further more I wish these 2 Luck with there endeavor however it will be an uphill battle. They should work for someone else for a long while and be able to produce at minimum 6 figures worth of business before going out and opening up shop. Good luck guys.

Unlike recent posts, I wish the psabjj team best of luck. I had the pleasure to train with numerous instructors over the years, including Professor Steven Crocilla. He is an amazing person and instructor, along with the other psabjj staff members. I can't wait to see where they will be in a few months.

Best Wishes!!!

The previous poster clearly has no understanding of what an amazing instructor is or should be

I would just like people to know that there is already a fantastic BJJ academy located a little further down the R-Train by Dekalb Ave. Unlike this academy, it is taught by two Renzo Gracie blackbelts (Prof. Pete Lawson and Prof. Hector Gonzalez). If you are looking for a BJJ academy with professor's who are properly ranked, please check out www.renzograciebrooklyn.com.

Thanks

Who is teaching here, who did they get there rank from and whats that teachers lineage. Yes ranking is important in BJJ. Its the standard.

February 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJack

Let's get the facts straight Steve!!! I am NOT your Student and Never Was!

Yes we rolled and I was actually teaching you few techniques! And you guys should not be calling yourself PROFESSORS!!!

That title is earned maybe once you are a Black Belt.

Best of luck.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThe Constant Grappler

The very fact that this thread exists in the context it does should send up RED FLAGS! These guys are not "professors" and should embarrassed to call themselves so. To have the balls to even present a WHITE BELT in ANY fashion as an "instructor" or any other capacity is ridiculous... I can't believe some of the shit that goes on out there in the BJJ world... What a pathetic joke...

February 29, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter"Professor" In Training

It is a shame that this part of Brooklyn cannot get a legit Academy. (Gracie Barra,, Alliance , Altos, are you listening? Peter L over near the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is the real deal and has been in the game a long time and is a true Professor and is Gene Dunn., Still I hoped that this was going to be a good place to go at least for an open mat given that I head out East for my BJJ fix.

Yes ,there are places to go in NYC such as Renzo, Marcello, or Alliance, still it would be nice to have a place in the PS area. Looked like they have a good space though. However with the questionable affiliation and rank from some questionable source it seems that BJJ may be going the way of TKD. Rorion might have been right after all.

We will have an open mat at AmeriKick very soon. Come check it out. If not your skill caleber please let me know. By the way Matthew Maldonado will be doing a seminar April 6th, try to come through.

TRUTH

1. People who post on these threads.. Usually dont even train.. internet tough guys, and arm chair quarterbacks.

2. People talk all day about scam schools, and mc dojos , and unqualified professors need to understand the the biggest SCAM in bjj is competition. Grapplers quest, and naga pull in Millions. They prey on white belts and blue belts who think there going to be the next big champion. 80 bux to compete in a 4 min round. times 2000 people , every weekend. They dont give a shit about anything but profits.. lets get serious..

3. Amerikick is a great place to train bjj if your schedule fits.

4. Gene Dunn is a certified Bad ass martial artist with 30 years of experience. He held a world record for fastest Knockout in bare knuckle karate int the 1980's . He also is one of the first few american blackbelts under renzo gracie. He has helped build many schools including RGA, Almedia BJJ, BBJJ, BMMA and many other schools.. If he wants to run his school a certian way.. WHO ARE YOU to tell him other wise.. If you dont like it dont go.. BUT being a hater online is simply whack.

listen guys, i am a purple belt from (RENZO GRACIE ACADEMY) and i trained with these guy's "MASTER" on a daily basis... his name is Gene Dunn and these two jokers were his students at his watered down BS schools that he uses as cash cows.....his motto is you can't compete ....you know why? LOL because he has jokers like these two punks who would get steam rolled by a legit 3 stripe while belt from ( renzo's, alliance, shaolin,or marcelo's) ......the AUDACITY that these two punks who never even earned a legitimate purple from a legitimate school to open a school and then call their unqualified behinds professors is beyond me......it is downright hilarious, stupefying, and disrespectful to my beloved sport of BJJ.

now more goodies on these two cowards......check out this forum link about these punks... http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f12/thoughts-bjj-school-new-beginner-1990077/ (LMFAO)

these two low lives are really giving a bad name to my sport so i did some more investigation on them so that they cannot possibly scam any one into giving up their hard earned money to their money grubbing illegitimate, unqualified "ACADEMY" (LMFAO)

and here is why i found out:

our two neighborhood punks seem to have fell out with their original " MASTER" Gene Dunn ....probably because he didn't want them opening a school and bringing heat to his watered down operation LOL

so now these cowards have gone to a legitimate school ( Marcelo Garcia's) in hope of giving their valueless belts some legitimacy!!
and I hear from well placed sources that in fact they are being steam rolled by all comers!!! LOL ( im guessing marcelo is unaware of their dirty deeds) otherwise he would strip them of their meaningless ranks and bitch slap them into honesty...LOL

BOTTOM LINE PEOPLE:

DO NOT TRAIN AT this scam school........just based on the BJJ lineage and quality angle....never mind the MCdojo dishonest nature of their contracts ...

If you want great bjj instruction in NYC...put in a little effort and take your behind to manhattan to either of these great schools ( RENZO GRACIE, ALLIANCE, SHAOLIN's, MARCELO GARCIA's) and you will be taught by legitimate world class BLACK BELT INSTRUCTORS....with high level training partners......and a culture of excellence , honesty, and which promotes competition and improvement.

don't believe the BS by these turds about how they have a safe environment for you to train in.........all of the above places are safer just based on the fact you are being taught by people who " KNOW" what they are talking about....not two punks who BRING SHAME ON A SPORT ....they claim to be a part of .....but in reality have nothing to do with.

your friendly concerned neighborhood jiu jitsu guy ;D

REAL BJJ PRACTITIONER - for someone who's just a purple belt at the same school as Dunn's, I would think you would have more respect for your senior. If you train with him on a "daily basis" as you say, I'm sure you wouldn't say to him that his schools are "bs cash cows" to his face.

You may think you're being "honorable," but you sound no better than any non-training troll on the internet.
