Hoi Polloi Vintage Curios to Close Next Week

Hoi Polloi, the "vintage curio" and knick-knack shop that opened last October on Sixth Street just east of Fifth Avenue, will be closing for good next week. There's currently a 50% off sale on.

The shop, which has merchandise very similar to that of the late, lamented Bob and Judi's and Under the Pig, is run by three siblings who grew up in the neighborhood and had assembled a very funky assortment of items over the years through curb rescue, donations, and clearing attics. The space looks a bit like your wild friend's cluttered apartment, stuffed with old furnishings, antiques, and some items that I'm sure haven't been up for sale since the 60s.

They've kept odd hours for the past few months, but should now be open every day until they close for good. If you have a chance I'd recommend dropping by before then, not only because you'll get a great deal, but because this place can truly also double as an Americana Museum.

Thought they had already closed months ago. Every time I walk by the gate is pulled down. Perhaps if they had actually opened the store for a few hours each day they could have stayed alive.

This place hasn't been open for months, out of nowhere they opened up again to sell everything. Odd.

Exactly Chris. I tried to go many times and they were never open. Had they kept regular hours perhaps people could have found them. When you're off the avenue especially you need to keep regular hours otherwise people will just give up like I did.

It has been CLOSED though for months and months.

I too thought they were closed and it /this didn't surprise me at all. I went in a few times and found something interesting, but their prices were insanely high, i.e. $150 for a vintage floor standing coat rack, the kind you see at Brooklyn Flea every other weekend for 50-75 bucks.

Best Wishes

This store was nothing like Bob and Judy's place which showcased well chosen merchandise and reasonable prices and terrific customer service. I would blame location but they had visibility from 5th Ave. Just and ill conceived idea.
