Signage Up at Beygl

Lots of action this week on Fifth Avenue between First and Second Streets. First we've got Brooklyn Central Pizza opening tomorrow, and right next door there's Beygl, most likely opening by the end of the month.
Signage went up last week, and it continues the reclaimed wood aesthetic that's going on inside. They've also posted their hours on the front doorway: During the week they'll be open from 6 AM - 6 PM, on Saturdays they'll be open from 7 to 6, and Sundays from 7 to 3. Those are fairly standard hours for a place selling breakfast items, but I wonder if closing so early will hurt business.

I guess those of us who work will never visit this place. Hours are terrible.
What if you want to go after work and get some bagels for the morning? Guess I'll try this on my next day off.
I expect those hours to be very problematic.
Those are the same hours as Bagel Hole and Bagel Delight and Bagel Market is only open one hour later.
Who buys bagels the night before? Theyre open at 6am
Bagel world is open till 10pm.
Even though their bagels suck, they at least have decent hours.
7pm is much better than 6. I know very few people who get home from work before 6pm.
Sure, you can get them in the morning but only if you live within a few blocks. Otherwise, this place will not draw in the huge crowds that walk by on their way home from work around 6/7/8pm.
Seriously? 6pm??? Because people only eat bagels in the morning???
Thank you, PSP. I love to have a bagel in the evening on occasion. Plus, apparently they have house smoked meats too and sandwiches and coffee. Would love to have that as an option for dinner as well. Park Slope (especially with all those new condos on 4th Avenue filled with singles) is becoming younger with a large bar/singles crowd on the weeknights and especially weekends. It would make sense to not only cater to those who have kids and get up at 6am, but to those of us who don't have kids, go to work all day and still want to enjoy the neighborhood when we get home. Many of Park Slope businesses seem to be taking note (our local coffee shop is now open till 9pm) because they realize that closing early is a death sentence. You can't make these high rents on only morning hours.
So many business people in Park Slope need a crash course in, well...business.
That new salad place coming to 7th Ave (Just Salad it's called?) is going to be open till 10pm and the new DavidsTea should be open fairly late as well. Many of the businesses on 7th Avenue seem to oddly be open later than many of those on 5th. 7th is making a comeback, if you ask me. 5th has a lot of crap and the northern section is a bit inundated on Barclays arena nights.
Just noticed the Sunday hours, again, seriously????? Only open until 3pm? On brunch day? When some people don't even eat until 2pm? And, aren't they selling more things than bagels?
Most people I know are just waking up at 3pm on Sundays. And they all live in Park Slope. This business is sounding lame-o.
Good bagel shops dont make their big business from later hours, unlike regular restaurants. They make their big business either from catering (biggest in hood is La Bagel Delight) or from wholesaling to other businesses. Bagel Hole provides all the bagels for Union Market for example. Bagel World and other stay open late because they cant thrive with one of these options.
Harry sure doth complain a lot. Not happy with Brooklyn Central's hours, not happy with Beygl's hours. Looks like we need to open Harry's Place, open from 4 AM-6 AM, noon-2 PM and 10:30 PM-midnight, selling bagels at night and pizza for lunch.
Jbob,
You are correct, so will Beygl be catering or wholesaling?
If not, I suggest they extend the hours.
Stella, it's all in good fun. I try to check out every new place and visit them as often as I can. I just think business men/women in Park Slope are especially slow. You go to most neighborhoods in NYC and you can get a bagel at 8pm. For some reason, Park Slope acts as if it's some remote village unconnected to NYC, the alleged city that never sleeps. I just think it's time to change with the times and step it up a little bit to survive in this economy. New Yorkers are a diverse bunch, lots of people work long hours and off hours. Having shops that open from 12-6 (so common in our neighborhood) means people like me never go to your store, even if we'd like to.
JBOB, to me it borders on criminal, but Union Market gets their bagels from Terrace, not Bagel Hole. Unbelievable when the best bagels in the city are right next door. So at least five times a week I walk right past Union Market and into Bagel Hole for my breakfast.
Union Market does NOT carry Bagel Hole. I wish.
Bagel Hole supplies their bagels to Russ & Daughters. Best bagel for the best appetizer store in the city.
Sorry youre both right- its Russ and Daughters for Bagel Hole and Union Market for Terrace. And I agree its criminal that Union market doesnt use Bagel hole, I imagine Terrace with its long history of labor violations can cut a better price.
But the points the same that later hours for a bagel joint are not the best way to make a buck. If Begyl is as good as it sounds it will soon enough open one of these channels.Besides later hours for any baker means hiring more outside staff-I suspect for a new business theyre taking a wait and see.
Harry-if you want later business hours go to Manhattan. Theres just not the population to support such a model for every PS business. Compare PS to any suburban neighborhood on LI or NJ and its a late night nirvana.
Yeah, those bagel places really pack them in the late afternoons, don't they?
There are countless businesses in the Slope which keep hours like this. Hell, Blue Sky Bakery's closed by about 1 or 2 PM every day. I don't see them hurting for business one bit.
If the place makes a good bagel, I'll be there.
Think about how many Bagel Hole bagels are sold at Hungry Ghost every day, which seems to have become the big coffee shop on the north end of the neighborhood. Jbob is exactly right.
I'm praying they will carry premium smoked fish. We have Shelsky's over on Smith but it would be great if there was a Park Slope option.
Other than the early closing on Sunday (the biggest bagel day of the week I am sure) the hours are fine.
I work, I am home after 7 most nights - but I am not eating bagels or appetizing at 7:30pm.
brklynmind speaks the truth. Hours are just fine. I too hope they have good appetizers/smoked fish/schmear/etc.
what most people are failing to realize is that there are a decent amount of people who spend their days in and around park slope.
not everyone needs to make their living by traveling to other places.
this looks like an awesome new lunch spot for me.
So does Beygl sell bagels??
