Bay Ridge's Burger Bistro Taking Over Kiku Space
Friday, February 10, 2012 at 9:15AM
When Babouche closed in November, it took only a week for Kiku, the Japanese restaurant a few doors down Fifth, to announce their intentions to move into the space. Well that opened back on January 26th, and two weeks later the Kiku space, between Lincoln and Berkeley, has already been rented out.
Grub Street is reporting that the second outpost of the popular Bay Ridge Burger Bistro will be opening next month in the space, where they'll be building "a 1,000-square-foot replica of the original."
Best known for its absolutely crazy, gut-busting burgers, like the Veal Osso Bucco burger, Turducken burger, waffle burger sliders, and, of course, the Donut Burger, it's clear that the two owners, John and Vincent, who met each other at Morton's Steakhouse, are passionate about what they serve. Other sandwiches include lobster rolls and NY Strip, and don't forget about the BLT cupcake for dessert! There's also a nice selection of beer and wine.
Here's the message from the owners on their website:
"We serve the finest ingredients available and don't believe in ruining the flavor by over-seasoning. With over 20 different cheeses and toppings, 6 specialty sauces, and 5 fresh breads to choose from, there are over two million combinations, therefore putting you in complete control of your burger's destiny..."
Yes, the Burger Parade isn't over yet, folks. And don't forget Chez Bibis Burger Bar, opening basically right across the street.

I was just thinking that Park Slope needs another burger place. Having 67 Burger, Bonnie's, two 5 Guys, Bareburger and that new Chez Bibi Burger that's opening up across the street from this one isn't enough.
Seriously, you're just f'ing with us now right Dan? ANOTHER burger place? Come on!!!!!
their reviews on yelp are stellar. how in the world is this place going to be opened by march 1? that is a quick renovation!

And that's not even including places that do other things but have great burgers like Dram Shop or even Thistle Hill, Sheep Station, Grand Canyon, Corner Burger, Sweetwolf's...and Flipster's (bleh). And they're all in the same general area of the neighborhood. So weird.
Go ahead, haters, criticize me, but this is further evidence of the homogenization of Park Slope. Let's see: burger joint, bar, burger joint, bar, nail salon, real estate office, bank, burger joint, bar and Talde.
and, our favorite troll will say: "Burger joints suck"
So are you saying that Park slope doesn't also have sushi, thai, korean, mexican, chinese, pizza/italian, middle eastern, greek, indian, ethiopian food? Because it does and a whole lot more.
Ok so there are 10 burger places now. You DO realize there are over 200 restaurants in Park Slope, correct?
Sterling: Yes, you are absolutely right. There are more than 200 restaurants and bars in Park Slope. But, when we look at openings in the past six months, we see they are disproportionately bars and burger joints. Maybe this is what the citizens of Park Slope, USA want. Maybe there are dozens of entrepreneurs who believe they have the formula for success. What I'm saying is that there's very little (not zero, but very little) originality in the new joints opening in the neighborhood. That saddens me.
I see lots of other openings, but I suppose we see what we want to see. I see Talde, Noella Brew bar, a new Hungarian/French place where Ozzie's was, Beauty Bar and Kos Kaffe, I see Fleishers the best damn butcher i've ever been to, I see a couple of new bars, I see a new Franny's coming along, I see some excellent pizza at South Brooklyn, I see Terroir is opening up in the slope. I see tons of variety, but some people choose to focus on the handful of burger places as if it's the plague or something. Personally I'm thrilled that the days of storefronts staying vacant for a year (or years!) seems to be over. If some of these don't make it, fine. On to the next. But to suggest that there isn't a HUGE variety of options in Park Slope is silly. I like burgers anyway.
It's also funny to me that people complain about the new burger places like this one and bareburger, but clearly they are doing well enough that they are expanding their chain. So people are buying their product or else they wouldn't expand. So don't make it seem like these people are morons since it's at least hundreds of thousands of dollars to open up a new restaurant. I bet the dude opening this place has more money than I do if he can open up another place in a high rent district like park slope so more power to him. If you'd like to see something else, how about you open it?
Sterling...CHURCH! thank you!
The decision to open a restaurant doesn't happen overnight. Nobody is going to have the bright idea, say, tomorrow to open a new burger joint in Park Slope. Easy, folks. The problem is that these restauranteurs all probably had the same idea at the same time, and that was months and months ago. Next year it will be five Montreal-style smoked meat delis opening at the same time. /tired of the bitching. Talk about a first world problem.
No one going to mention the rising tide of BBQ swelling around Dinosaur? All these fad opening aren't a mistake. Neighborhoods heat up, more entrepreneurial eyes turn toward them and in so doing many pair of those eyes will recognize an under-served part of the market. Burgers, BBQ, bars... its all the same. Once you start to get brand names like 5 guys etc the wave is usually waning. The burger wave seems to have some staying power though. I showed the bistro guys a few spots months ago.... just took them this long to find the right joint or they would have been in with the rest of the burger gang.
I found my own under-served niche but if I give up the goods there will be six alike places before mine gets off the ground.
...but AMEN cbl.... our neighborhood is developing at break neck speeds beyond that of even Manhattan. Don't bitch.
park slope rocks. if you like chain restaurants and boring ass retail, move to manhattan. if you want local bars where bartenders know your name, restaurants where you can become a regular after 1 visit and coffee shops where one can linger and chat with friends, then park slope is for you. so we have a few too many burgers, big woop. this is a healthy, thriving neighborhood on the verge of being inundated with higher quality "stuff" because i think it's finally caught up to those in the know that there is a huge amount of wealth combined with a population eager to spend it locally. that combined with the arena has created a falling vacancy rate, steady (if not rising) real estate values and an investment in schools, parks and renovation most neighborhoods would wish they had. be thankful and stop yer bitchin as Mr. Re so rightly says!
MmmmMmm Sweetwolf's burger.
Will there be a shuttle between the park slope BBQ District and the park slope Burger District?
^^LOL
I just walked past this place. They have a temporarily but professionally made sign up and even have menus out to take. Looking inside, it looks like it's going to be a fairly sparse space and could probably be ready to open by the 1st.
Concepts become successful and, then, imitated to the point of oversaturation......THEN that oversaturation hits Park Slope, which usually occurs about a year before it then hits outside New York.
Froyo. Bahn Mi. We've been there.
The good news is that, while the creme of the crop sticks around, the pretenders quickly fall by the wayside.
Bring on the burgers. Maybe we'll get one on par with the already excellent burgers in our overall neighborhood (let's see......Dram Shop/Benchmark/James/Vanderbilt/67/Flatbush Farm/Bareburger/Dean Street), and maybe we won't.
OHMYGOD! We're gonna have as many burger places as 7th Avenue!!!!!!
