MIX Was Closed Last Night
Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 11:32AM
Many thanks to a tipster for forwarding along word that MIX, the small plates redesign of Barrio, on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Third Street, was not open for dinner service last night. Could the axe have already fallen?
The restaurant has been a ghost town most nights since its relaunch last month, which was largely met with indifference by a neighborhood tired of small, pricey plates. Even though they put a lot of work into designing a new menu (and redesigning the space), and the food itself looks pretty good, there's really nothing they offer that's been enticing new customers through the door.
Even though they're supposed to be open every day by 11:30 AM (and at 3 on Mondays- Wednesdays), the ominous metal gates have oftentimes been down well into the afternoon. The signage they installed is already starting to peel, and word is that they were completely empty on Valentine's day, when even the most humdrum restaurants usually attract a couple patrons.
If MIX is in fact closed for good, that would certainly be a record of some sort.

I mean, LOOK at it! It looks like it's abandoned! The signage is terrible, they kept that same ratty looking orange entrance thing, the building next door looks like it's going to FALL DOWN. That entire corner with this, Cheeburger and then the empty Sette just need a complete and total overhaul.
I suggest 5 napkin burger, a Chipotle and place like Reno Provisions with room for outdoor seating because the one now on Union is so popular there's no room in there.
That will make for one desolate corner, too, with Sette gone as well. Maybe Cheeburger Cheeburger could open two more locations and dominate the corner!
I'm pretty sure that abandoned building is a raccoon haven in the summer months, too. My cat was killed by a raccoon in my apartment last summer while I wasn't there. I was on the top floor of 477 just down the block. I spent many a night stalking the roofs afterward taking stock of the 'coon situation. I'm glad to have moved...
that place sucked.... glad to see it closed!
Talde No. 3?
@Sterling: I'm busting my gut laughing. It's been more than 24 hours since the last Talde posting on this site and the DTs were starting to affect me.
A day without Talde is not a day worth living. :)
The interior seems to look nice, but I hate all the brown outside - definitely unwelcoming. And I wish they'd filled up those nicely done flowerboxes lining the patio. Little colorful touches would have gone a long way toward zoning out the pay phone/collection of newspaper boxes outside, etc.
What a shame for the people who JUST put so much money into this place. Good luck to them.
Have people who declare that a place "suck" actually given it a chance.
In this case, it wasn't open long enough for anyone to try.
Was empty each time I passed by.
They aren't lacking for money, Meh. The dude owns Calle Ocho (among others) which is a great place. Apparently he just skimps on his Brooklyn place cause he thinks we don't deserve as nice. I don't know...it boggles the mind that the same person could own Calle Ocho and this. it's like night and day in terms of quality. They would NEVER have slapped up a sign like that on Calle Ocho. Never.
The whole way that Barrio closed so suddenly and without notice -- then mysteriously re-appeared as Mix -- reeked of desperation. I used to kinda like Barrio, but I had zero interest in trying Mix initially because it just seemed like a misguided "grasping at straws." Then when Mix continued to be empty night after night, it was just hopeless.
Did someone really suggest a Chipotle for this location? Please go shoot yourself.
No you're right. 2 huge empty spaces and a Cheeburger Cheeburger is much better than a well-loved and reputable place like Chipotle.
The rent on these corner spaces is almost 20K a month. If you think it's going to be anything mom and pop, you're kidding yourself.
I actually ate here and thought it was great. Had some sliders in bacon fat and some great gnocchi with mushrooms during brunch hour. Before I even got a chance to try the dinner menu the younger fellow who works there told me they were changing it around & adding some new items. But now this. It certainly doesn't look good... Also, these places that open at 11am some days, 3pm other days, not at all on certain days, etc. are just confusing.
The quickest closing I can remember is Bibi's, which couldn't have been a couple of months. This may have been quicker.
I also actually may agree with the HPS troll on this for once, even though I never got around to trying Mix.
Also, at some point, corners like this which keep on turning over bad concept after bad concept are going to have to settle on something that actually sticks. Is Chipotle ideally what I would want? Probably not, but It'd be close enough to cater to the hospital crowd and would still be miles better than Cheeburger.
How does Subway go so underneath the radar that you rarely hear people complain about them?
I can't stand that place mix!
Not surprised. My wife and I tried this place out on Valentines Day. We got a reservation, which turned out to be unnecessary, as they were only about a quarter full. The service was non-existent. After over 15 minutes without a waiter even coming by to ask us if we wanted a drink we flagged down a bus boy and asked if he could send a waiter over. We waited about 10 more minutes, and we decided to just go elsewhere. They really did not have their act together. It's a shame too, because I really like Barrio.
Wow. Walked out? That's really bad. It sounds like they weren't even trying.
It shocks me that of all the places in Park Slope, that someone would choose THIS place for Valentine's day. Was your sweetie a bad girl this year or something??? :)
Yeah, I can't remember the last time I walked out of a restaurant, but it was really terrible service. I think there was just one waiter, and he never revisited our section after seating us. We saw another couple walk out as well. Maybe there was some explanation for why there were so understaffed, but it did not inspire confidence. We used to go to Barrio all the time and I never had any problem.
If I worked for them, I would cash that last paycheck and be out the door.
It sounds as if the last nail is being driven into the coffin as we speak.
So, what should go into that space? IHOP, Horn and Hardardt Automat, McD's?
McDonald's is a tried and true concept, maybe they would be a good addition to the corner?
A Le Pain Quotidien would be perfect for that corner.
There's also a whole world in between Mix and McDonalds. A perfect example is Dizzy's taking over the cursiest of cursed PS spots. Dizzy's has a following and, barring them completely blowing it, are going to finally bring some stability to that corner.
Now who would bring stability to a corner that's switched over a thousand times as well in the past ten years is a ball I throw back at everyone else on here.
