New Restaurant Shaping Up at 88 Fifth Avenue
Friday, February 3, 2012 at 11:01AM
A few months after Calexico, the Mexican restaurant on Fifth Avenue near Warren Street, shut down last May after being seized for nonpayment of taxes, construction began on a new restaurant there, one which a contractor in the space told me would be "healthy." That was further corroborated when I noticed that a letter in the dorway was addressed to Pure Restaurant, which is possibly its name.
That's all I got so far, but even though construction has been progressing slowly, it's definitely progressing. Over the past couple weeks an entirely new facade has been installed, one with floor-to-ceiling windows. Stay tuned for more information as soon as I'm able to track down an owner.

There are so many underused, or unused, spots still remaining on North 5th Ave. It'd be wonderful to see what someone with vision and a commitment to quality would do with any of them.
Also, I'd love for people to frequent places like Sky Ice, who are exactly just what I described, but seem to be drowning.
Live very close to the uninviting former spectre of Calexico. Would be very interested in seeing what becomes of "Pure."
the for rent signs have already been taken down at OKO on 5th and leaf n bean on 7th. One good thing about the arena probably means any vacant storefronts will be snapped up quickly. seems that is the case.
I wonder what impact the arena has on the leaf 'n bean location. I would hope not a lot......
Why is that ParkSloper? Too many fancy restaurants opening up on Flatbush Ave for your taste? I'm kidding with you but seriously the impact of the arena so far seems to be a delightful new array of bars and restaurants into the area. The onslaught of chains and trashy stuff just hasn't materialized at all, quite the opposite.
I agree with ParkPlace. Everything should go to Sky Ice right now and spend some money. Delicious food and ice cream, and genuinely very nice people.
Sky ice is absolutely delicious. I have NO IDEA why people don't flock there. Seriously good, but I think the name is weird. It sounds like dessert but their savory foods are the best thing they do. I think that name makes people think it's ice cream or sorbet or something.
Sky ice is an awful name if they sell anything other than ice related stuff. I've walked by several times and have never been enticed to go in.
This is going to sound crazy, but I actually think Ample Hills had something to do with Sky Ice not doing well. I thought their ice cream was the best thing ever......for the two weeks they were open and Ample Hills wasn't. After they opened, it was game, set, salted crack caramel.
Still, though, people should really give the savory options a shot. I think their fake pad thai is delicious.
Those spots mentioned are way too far down to be affected by arena traffic. It's time to learn to love the big monster. It ain't going away.
How somewhat hasn't grabbed the Bergen Tile space and gone apeshit on it is amazing. Oh, what I'd do with that if I won the lottery.
Some "coming soon" signage up this weekend for Pure. Lots of one-word descriptors. Looks to be a healthy burgers, etc., simple food concept. I live pretty damn close to this, so they'll get more than a look from me.
This eatery looks like a really exciting addition to the area. It's not too often that a restaurant sets out to establish a vision-- an atmosphere for eating. I appreciate this because it not only looks like an inventive, new place, but also an investment in the area, where great, small gems are hard to come by. Looking forward to its opening!
