Open for Business: Feluccio, 364 Prospect Avenue

An Italian restaurant opened last Thursday on the corner of Seventh and Prospect Avenues, in the space that was formerly a video store. According to their Facebook page, "Feluccio is THE place to have great wines from around the world as well as awesome craft beers, and to go along with it all will be some delicious authentic Italian pizza and food."

It's a nicely laid out space (reminds me a little of Piccoli Trattoria a few blocks away, actually), with a small bar, brick walls, lots of wood, and about 40 seats.

The menu is inexpensive and expansive, with a wide selection of appetizers, pastas, entrees, and pizza, along with a bar menu, an afternoon "Spuntino" menu, and a nice selection of beer and wine.

Appetizers include stuffed zucchini, peppers, and eggplant, Caprese salad, and a selection of antipasti. Pastas are generally traditional offerings like spaghetti and meatballs, rigatoni al ragu, and spaghetti aglio e olio. Entrees are also mainly old favorites like chicken parm, steak, baked chicken, and grilled salmon, but the burger, which comes toped with fresh Mozzarella, grilled sweet peppers, and caramelized onions, sounds intriguing.

Where the menu really shines is the pizza selection. There are 12 options, ranging from traditional (Diavola, topped with spicy salami) to downright insane (Americana, topped with corn, hot dogs, and fries). Others include Quattro Formaggi, Frutti di Mare, and the Feluccio (bacon, anchovies, chives, cherry tomatoes, dried black olives, and red hot pepper). All pizzas are available in 10, 12, 14, or 18 inches. I'm also intrigued by the calzones and fresh focaccia on offer, which you don't see at every Italian restaurant.

There's also a bar menu, which includes chicken fingers, wings, and mozzarella sticks, along with a wide panini selection. The menu is incredibly inexpensive, with entrees and pizzas averaging only about $10-15.

Chick through for photos of the entire menu.

Looks like we've got a Little Italy thing going on down that end of the Slope.
Interesting demographics, with some old-time Italian-American families homesteading round the cemetery and into Windsor Terrace.

Pastas are very fairly priced for 2012.

Inquiring minds want to know: what kinda oven will those pizzas be cookin' in?

Finally, is the name of the restaurant a family name? Where are they from? (Cue: snide jokes about the similarity of their name to certain other words).

Drove by a couple of nights ago and the TV that you can barely see in the picture above was on and it totally dominated the restaurant and ruined any type of ambiance the place may have had. The restaurant is much smaller than it appears in the picture and the TV just takes the whole place over and, to me at least, makes it very uninviting. If I want to be overpowered by flat screens I'll head to a sports bar.

Holy crap that is an unfortunate name for a restaurant.

Feluccio: Our place sucks good.

not going to last. tv's are a restaurant killer. americans watch too much tv and it's not appropriate for a dinner setting.

Perhaps they could find a less legible font for their ginormous menu?

Probably not.

I'm bored, I can make pasta at home.

First and foremost we at Feluccio would like to thank you for writing this article about our new establishment, and appreciating real, authentic Italian cuisine. Please bear with us as we try and iron out the little kinks that we may find here and there, starting with our menu. As for our TV's we apologize if anyone feels that it creates an uninviting atmosphere, we welcome families coming for dinner as well as other patrons who would like to enjoy the bar atmosphere. Lastly, I would like to add that our name is a childhood nickname for a family member from Italy. Thank you once again for writing this article.

Feluccio: You have learned lesson #1 of opening a restaurant in the internet era: keep smiling and don't let the haters get you down. So, a handful of people who read this site have criticized that you have a TV in your dining room. Someone has even criticized the font you use for your menu. Another commenter has made us aware that he makes pretty good pasta at home.
Doubt any of the above have tasted your food.

Make good food, create a pleasant atmosphere, give people friendly, helpful service and people will vote with their feet. Buona Fortuna, Feluccio!

buonafortuna, i agree, the owner handled it nicely, but it's impossible for the owner to do one of the things you've asked of him, to create a pleasant atmosphere. The TV precludes that. They might have the best food in the neighborhood but I don't want to have to talk over a TV or have the distraction of a TV while I eat at a place like that. I can have that at home or in a bar if I choose to eat in a bar. It's a shame because I think my family would like a lot of items I see on the menu and lord knows I love a craft beer or six.

What kind of oven will your pizzas be baked in?

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbuonafortuna, feluccio

Feluccio, how about you try setting the TV to closed caption and turning off the sound? Then those who want to ignore the TV can do so and those who want to watch can also do so.

Good luck with your venture.

Wow, what a wonderful place. Took my family out for a special dinner last night. The food was out of this world, we all enjoyed ourselves and were pleasantly surprised by the total on the check. Took a chance and was not disappointed. Can't wait to return to this real down to earth place.
