Open for Business: Badlands Barber & Salon, 87 Fifth Avenue

"Badass cuts, clips, and color- for men and women!" is the tagline for the new hybrid barber shop/salon that just opened in the space that was last occupied by clothing boutique Animated Closet, on Fifth between Park and Prospect.
Badlands is the brainchild of Eleni Diamantopoulos and Deirdre Novella, who met in Los Angeles and realized that there were no hybrid barber shop/salons in New York, even though they're popular on the west coast. Their page on Indiegogo describes their backgrounds as well as the vision, stating that "Badlands NYC will fill a gaping hole in the salon market in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Currently there are no salons who cater to our demographic and no salons anywhere in Brooklyn who operate as a hybrid barber/salon."
The site also mentions that this is the first shop in existence "to specialize in women's cuts." Looks like they'll double as an art gallery, showcasing local works, and that they "will also offer a community program that offers free haircut vouchers to under-privileged kids who live in the greater Brooklyn area."
Sounds like a novel idea, and they'll be giving back to the community. Welcome to the neighborhood!

My hair's not exciting enough for a place like this, but it is pretty cool-looking and, yeah, meets a niche. All our barber shops are pretty square.
I'd already erased Animated Closet from my memory. Sad.
Wow, how unique. Outsiders who think they "discovered" Brooklyn by moving into Park Slope. Furthermore, helping the "underprivaleged" by getting them free haircuts? You're true missionaries.
I think it is so great to see new business owners taking a risk to open new shops in town that service the community. I applaud their desire to think about giving back when so many of us don't.
I'm not an outsider, I moved to Brooklyn in 1991! I was in Lis Angeles for two years...but thanks for your comment Michael!-Deirdre
I for one am very, very thrilled!!!
