Baluchis Gets Some Surprisingly Cool Neon Signage
Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 1:27PM
It was pleasantly surprising to discover that Baluchi's, the Indian restaurant on Fifth between Second and Third Streets that's a part of a 5-restaurant Manhattan-based mini-chain, had removed their old signage and replaced it with an old-fashioned, neon-powered vertical sign.
Complete with yellow light bulbs along the rim, it's a total throwback. Along with Beauty Bar, we've gotten some quality retro signs recently.

that money would have been better spent on not being closed down by the DOH a few weeks back
I wonder if the people who live in those apartments with windows right next to the sign feel the same sense of retro coolness?
now if their food was any good, we would have something here..............
We love Indian food and were thrilled when this place opened so close to us, but, blech, and, blech again
We walked by last night and commiserated for the poor people on the 2nd floor. That sign ruined their life.
Back when I lived in Manhattan many years ago I went to a Baluchis and had an incredibly rude waitress. I wrote the management to complain and they wrote me back, apologized profusely and treated my wife and I to the most lavish meal on the house.
I will forever be impressed with them.
I like Baluchis, reliable enough for the occasional tikka masala or vindaloo. I thought the same thing, though, when I saw this sign going up...surprisingly cool but must suck to live in that building now.
living above a restaurant is generally a bad idea, considering that the problems below can quickly become your own problems as well. that said, i saw the signage the other day thought: "huh, never noticed that. looking pretty good." sympathies to the renters above - at least they get their own little slice of seinfeld in their lives.
Yup, would hate to live there, but the food, while it doesn't stretch the imagination, doesn't dissapoint, and there certainly aren't a whole lot of better options in the neighborhood if you want Indian. I also find the staff at this particular Baluchi's to be lovely.
Twice I've witnessed a guy in a white coat (either a chef or some other kitchen worker) stand outside the Baluchi kitchen and blow snot out of one nostril while holding the other nostril shut with a finger. After repeating the exercise with the other nostril, he then walked right back into the ktichen.
Again - I've seen this twice, not once.
I am still looking for a decent Indian restaurant to order from.
ParkSloper, if you only knew what happens in restaurant kitchens that you HAVEN'T seen, you'd never eat out again!
Agreed Me(h) but I too have seen Snot Chef spray the sidewalk multiple times. That kitchen is awful and they insist on spraying all of their scraps out onto the sidewalk after lunch and dinner services.
I've given them a chance once every 6 months since they opened and each time I didn't finish the meal. That place is foul.
Okay, though funny...I have to admit, Snot Chef is now going to enter my consciousness every time I think about ordering here. Thankfully, the girlfriend doesn't like Indian so its not too often anymore.
I live across the street, and yes, we hate that sign with a passion - it's blinding and totally ruined the night-time view here.
None of you have ever had Snot Vindaloo before, apparently.
