Jennifer Convertibles Out, Medical Center In on Fifth

The spacious Jennifer Convertibles, the furniture store on Fifth Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets, shut down as planed last week, and the next tenant, a walk-in medical center named Premier Care, has already announced that it will be moving into the space.

The new medical center will be open seven days a week, and walk-ins are welcome. Seems like it'll be a good place to go when you're looking for some middle ground between a Band-Aid and the ER.

great place to check on my VD

This is fabulous. They've been getting these all over the country and I am so excited to have access to this. I hate having to choose to either go to the ER or wait a week and a half for a doctor appointment. Really wonderful addition to the hood.

These places are for profit endeavors with doctors who are trained basically to overprescribe you medication and get you out the door as soon as possible. Going to a place like this is everything that is wrong with our healthcare system. They are better than nothing for those that have zero access to health care, but for those with a health plan and access to qualified doctors, you should not be going to a place like this unless absolutely necessary.

The last time I had a kidney stone I was able to find one of these type of places on a Friday evening and walk out with enough Percocet to make it through the weekend and pass the fucker.

The time before that I was new to Brooklyn, didn't have health insurance and had no idea what to do. I certainly couldn't afford a retail trip to the ER. Oy.

One of the great pleasures I get out of my day is reading the comments section of HPS. Protected by anonymity, we are free to spout both worthless gibberish and valuable insights. I, myself, have done both, with the worthless gibberish edging out the valuable insights by a slim percentage.

So, in that vein, let me say that the announcement of a "doc in the box" storefront medical center has churned up a few strong feelings here already.
Yes, these facilities are intended to make money. Show me a business on Fifth Ave., or anywhere for that matter, not intended to make money. At the same time, such clinics fill a need: who wants to wait in an ER for hours for a non-life threatening emergency? Kid has an ear infection? Wife has a urinary tract infection? You've been putting your pecker where it doesn't belong and now have a burning discharge? Don't have a family doctor you can call? Here's a convenient little place to get treated.

Unfortunately, there exist a significant proportion of people who don't have a family doctor to call their own and to call when one of life's nasty health problems develop. More unfortunately, there are 40 million people in this country without health insurance that the Right believes don't have a constitutionally-supported right to insurance and health care. Oh, but that's another subject altogether.

I'm looking for a Dale Talde connection here. Perhaps a vending machine in the waiting room selling Dale Talde beef jerky?

Not quite. Dale told me he's glad this place is opening up and plans to run free rickshaw rides from Pork Slope for all the locals that end up in a "pork and pbr pitcher coma". Always the kidder...

The best part of this is that, before Dr. Talde sees you, you get to meet with Nurse Diddles.

In all seriousness, I think all the above, positive AND negative, is actually true and relevant here.

This will make those evening strolls down fifth avenue so much fun...oh look...more uninsured people pouring out of the clinic. Oh Joy..isn't Park Slope really turning itself around these days!
