Open for Business: The Bagel Pub, 287 Ninth Street

                                                                  Twitter

A new bagel shop opened up today in the space that was last occupied by Aji Bar & Lounge, on Ninth Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, right next to the McDonald's.

It's a fairly straight-ahead, no-frills bagel and sandwich shop, a spot to grab some morning coffee before hopping on the subway. Not sure if the bagels are baked on-premises, but I hear from Twitter tipster @PilarToons that they were fresh enough that no toasting was required. Wraps, breakfast items like egg and cheese sandwiches, Boar's Head cold cuts, and a selection of pastries are on offer as well, along with a few varieties coffee from Kobricks. Hot food will be part of an expanded menu that's still in the works.

The large space is bright and airy, and a big back yard will open within a couple weeks. There's no liquor license (I guess the "pub" part of their name is just an artistic flourish), but the owners haven't ruled out pursuing one at some point in the future.

That spot also had a nice upstairs patio, I wonder if they'll open up that part again as well.

yeah, get the liquor license..."i love a scotch with my morning Bagel." Prediction.. like the 4 other places that have opened in this space since Sonny's Diner closed... this one will bite the dust. Sonny may be gone but I think he has cursed anyone who tries to open a business here and attempts to wipe out the memory of his famous75 cent breakfast.

I just found out that they do bake their bagels on premises. And today when I went in there was a big variety of homemade cream cheeses. The owner took me on a tour and showed me their huge baking facility! I was really impressed!

AMAZING PLACE!!! So happy they are here. Friendly peeps. Awesome bagels (almost as good as Bagel World...very close) and just a cool chill spot. Help keep them open...maybe they can drive out ghetto ass Mc Donald's.
