New Happy Taco Closed For Good

After being shuttered by the Department of Health last month for racking up a stomach-churning 82 violation points, New Happy Taco, the hole-in-the-wall taco joint at 82 Park Place between Flatbush and Seventh Avenues, is officially closed and the space has been put on the market.

This is not a major loss for the taco-loving community, trust me. The food was generally regarded as edible, but that's about as far as the compliments went (I'm sure there's an "Old Sad Taco" joke in there somewhere). It was quick and tended to hit the spot when in the mood for generic Mexican, though, so I'm sure it will be missed by some.

For those looking for an alternative, I'd recommend checking out Maya Taqueria on Vanderbilt.

Yeah, no big loss. I tried the burrito a couple of months ago, and the "chorizo" was sliced hot dogs. I'd suggest a better alternative for people into this kind of mexican/chinese masochism go across the street to Wai Ling. Maya on Vanderbilt is actually pretty good. Bay Area-style, as I understand it.

I actually love Maya Taqueria. They don't put stupid random lettuce garnishes on their tacos. And the shredded beef burritos are a delicious splurge. Skip the rice though as it's mostly flavorless. Maybe something useful can go into this space like a place to grab a bagel or tea before getting on the Q in the morning.

Shiva is being observed at Congregation Beth Elohim. No immediate survivors are known.

Janie...great idea. A bagel shop would kill in that location.

Oh racist God of Park Slope, when will your assault on Mexicans and Chinese-Mexicans cease? We sacrificed Calexico and La Taqueria and Uncle Moe's to your hatred-of-all-things-beany, yet still your thirst for blood went unquenched. And now you have taken New Happy Taco, granted our least favorite, arguably retarded, Mexican child, but still our child. When will it be enough, God of Park Slope? When will you once and for all bless your people with the Promised Land: fields of cilantro, rivers of salsa, majestic sour-cream-peaked mountains. When, oh Lord? When?

Diddles, My Child,

The Bay Area is a den of sin. I shall grace the pure, tree and stroller-lined streets of Park Slope with nothing from there. Not burritos. Not clam chowder. Not even a Journey reunion.

Repent.

Hear that, muthaf'ers? I gots me a direct line to Jesus Christ! Diddles asks and Jesus reacts. How sick is that? Oh, sorry I have to go now, it's Jesus on the other line. I always knew I was chosen.

No more fro-yo either. The only holy frozen substance to be consumed will be Salted Crack Caramel from Ample Hills.

It’s not “racism” in Park Slope, but culturally imperialistic passive aggression. It's the same nonsense faced by any Italian restaurant that dares the be a "red sauce" place. It's bullshit.

Also, this place was disgusting. If anyone who ran these places knew anything they would know that people genuinely want cheap tacos in this part of town. Just do it well & people come.

Dear Jesus C,

What about People's Pops? Personally I'm sort of on the fence. They're good and I like the concept, but I'm not sure they're any better than a piece of fruit. Don't get me wrong, oh Lord, I love the fruit you have bestowed upon us. For instance, I consume your holy watermelon almost every day, all praises to your name. But I'm just not sure, great Jesus, whether or not People's Pops is doing the Lord's work. Please let your people know, that we may spend our dollars wisely and enjoy only the tastiest (and holiest) of frozen treats. Quick shout out, oh Lord, to the chocolate sorbet from the Chocolate Room, the chocolate peanut butter cup ice from Louie G's, and the banana nut gelato from Sky Ice. Praise be!

Diddles, my son,

People's Pops is good for you. As a man who has led a simple life and shunned the luxuries which lead to sin and Googamooga, there is often nothing better than some shaved ice with red plum syrup.
