New "On-Street Bicycle Parking Facility" Installed In Front of Gorilla Coffee
Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:34PM
A parking spot in front of Gorilla Coffee, on the corner of Fifth and Park Place, was replaced late last week with a space for some additional bicycle parking.
The new facility holds about eight bikes, and is marked off by two big planters. In a press release sent out by Community Board 6, the DOT says that there will be no net loss of parking, because they "will be restoring a parking space on the other side of 5th Avenue as soon as possible, by May 31st the latest."
There's a similar facility on the corner of Smith and Sackett Streets in Carroll Gardens.

There should be a lot more of these all over the city. 8 people can now park their bike whereas 1 person could park their car previously. Bravo for DOT entering the 21st century with regard to biking.
They entered the 21st century by giving bike parking to a single business? What did the Gorillaladies do for that? What a waste
I think this is great. We need more space for bikes and less for cars. And I own a car!
It's not specifically for a business...ANY biker can park there. It's nice to have more bike parking, there isn't nearly enough and it definitely encourages people to ride when they know they have a good place to lock it up.
Was the parking space there before specifically for Gorilla, Jbob? Nope. Per usual, you make no sense and just like to complain.
8 spots on northern 5th ave will have zero overall effect-its a symbolic gesture and seems absurd if its not part of a wider program.
You don't say one positive thing, about anything, anywhere.
Its so nice the way you make me feel smart when you post. thanks
I approve of what the wonderful ladies of Gorrila have done, my children, as well as the additional parking space that will be replaced in order to keep my driving friends, happy. Remember, my children, people with cars do have the rights and needs I have provided for them, much like my disciple, Billy Diddles, needs his burrito.
However, I am speaking to you directly, ladies of Gorilla. Your regular drip coffee is way too acidic. I get too many prayers from the toilet late at night and cannot get to them all. Please.
Jesus, jew to jew... i heart your post
If the light is red and you're on a bike, the law says you should stop. Do you?
If the street is one way, do you follow that rule? Yes or no?
Riding your bike on the sidewalk is illegal.
Right of way is given, not taken.
Front light, rear reflector and helmet please.
If the light is red and you are walking, the law says you should stop. Do you?
Oh Gorilla, even Starbucks doesn't try to take all their ex-employees to court.
In that photo, there's one bike using the parking space. When I drive, there is usually a minimum of three or four people in my car.
What is wrong with additional bike racks on the sidewalk (such as the one in the photo)? You can park your bike on the sidewalk without interfering with pedestrians but I can't do that with my car. Not to mention that if I had an expensive bike I'd prefer to leave it far out of the way of traffic, buses, u-turn-doing drivers, etc.
this seems like a win for gorilla. opens up the space, makes it more aesthetically appealing than if some van was parked there. increases visibility, etc. and, i'd bet they have more customers who travel there by bike than automobile.
i wonder if what role, if any, gorilla itself had in this being installed here. or was it just random luck?
Me(h) is the typical entitled driver pissed they took away ONE parking spot (when there are hundreds more on every single street. They put up bike parking for 8 bikes. You have ALL OF 5TH AVENUE TO PARK YOUR CAR. AND ALL OF EVERY AVENUE AND EVERY STREET IN AMERICA.
And you begrudge a couple of bike parking spots??!
Even cooler than just these few bike parking spots is a whole bike parking/ storage facility! It is very state of the art and called Park Circle Storage (parkcirclestorage.com). No more lugging my bike upstairs and no more worrying about coming baxck to no bike or a damaged bike or a broken lock :)
