After 40 Years, The Park Florist to Close at End of the Month

Another longtime Slope business is about to close its doors for good.

The Park Florist, which has been on Seventh Avenue between First and Garfield since 1972, will be shutting down, as the owners, Simon and Doris Silberman, have decided to retire.

Best known for their creative floral arrangements and charmingly cluttered atmosphere, the florists specialized in everything from high-end wedding arrangements to simple single orchids. There were also a bunch of knick-knacks and other garden aids, generally of the antique variety.

The store is also of note for its multi-generational ownership, as Simon and Doris' granddaughter could usually be found assisting customers. It's comforting to know that they've decided to shut down on their own terms, as opposed to being forced out by a rent hike, say.

The florist will be closing at the end of the month; until then all merchandise is 50% off.

It is a good ending when long time shop owners close down on their own terms after a long run and being an ongoing part of the community for such a long time. Still sad to lose one of those shops that have been here forever.

People just don't go buy $50-100 bouquets of flowers like they used to. Especially when they are now so readily available at most grocery stores and bodegas for a fraction of the cost.

That being said, 7th Avenue desperately needs a garden center of some sort or a place for potted indoor and outdoor plants.

Yeah, it's a shame, it's such a nice shop! But, other than weddings and funerals, I always wonder how florists stay in business nowadays.

I've been in there multiple times over the years and they are so nice (not like the bunch at Bloom, but, I digress). happy retirement to them! Too bad the grand daughter isn't taking over the shop

Side note, many moons ago, this shop was an Ebinger's Bakery

Florists stay in business because there's an absolute difference between what you get at your corner bodega and what you get at a quality florist. If I just need to spruce up the house a bit? Bodega. Special occassion? Zuzu's or La Petit Fleur, for sure. Quality and arranging matter.

Clearly they DON'T stay in business, however as evidenced by this post and most of the great florists which have also closed in Manhattan over the past 10 years.

There are many reasons why businesses close. Bodega flowers, to me, are not a valid reason why actual florists close. As I said, there's a difference between what you buy at a bodega and the quality and service you get at a florist and I think most people know that.

If you can provide some information that points to my being wrong, please do so, but your connecting-of-dots-where-there-is-no-connection, opinion-you-confuse-as-fact, and use of CAPS don't automatically do that.

Bodega is such an overused term to apply to anything thats not a full service supermarket-truth is a lot of the small markets have begun carrying a really good selection of plants and flowers at reasonable prices-both JH market and the Bad Wife both just off 7th ave and 11th st have nice selections for instance. True florists have been relegated to high end arrangements and a smaller market.

Getting an arrangement of flowers is not necessarily a high-end thing. Granted, there are certain times of year, such as around Valentine's Day, where these businesses do enough bank to carry them through a hell of a lot, but they are still utilized.

Like I said, want something to spruce up the house for the weekend at the spur of the moment? Bodega flowers. Looking to actually give something nice to someone, or want a special touch? Florist. It's apples and oranges.

You are classier than the rest of us, Cuban. I haven't given or received a high end floral arrangement to someone in years. Too expensive. Nicer to pick up an orchid or potted flowering plant for 1/10th the cost and then they can plant it in the garden.

Union market has nice flowers now too. Not worthy of bringing to a dinner party at Oprah's house, but they are more than fine for most occasions.

"Clearly they DON'T stay in business, however as evidenced by this post"

No, they are retiring. Not closing because of rent or other issues. They also have/had other items to purchase like statutes and other garden related items. Sorry to see them go.

There's still Zuzu's petals which has been in the slope for over 30 years and Bloom.

Mostly Korean markets not Bodegas are in Park Slope.

anyone know how to get in touch with the owners here? Been trying to find a space like this on 7th ave to open another installation of my biz.

Went by to see the folks at Park Florist but they did not want to give out their landlords phone number (or take mine to give to him!).

They seemed a little bitter actually. I'm betting there is a little more to this story than simply retiring.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

Frankly, I'm glad to see this place go. They were far from friendly--I gave up trying to shop there after being greeted with a sneer and an eye roll each time I asked the price-per-stem for various flowers. The employees were about as cold as they come. I'd never realized that serving customers could be such a burden!
