Checking in on Zito's II, Under Construction in the Press 195 Space
Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 2:20PM
Press 195, the sandwich shop on Fifth between Union and Berkeley, has officially shut down and is in the process of being transformed into the neighborhood's second Zito's.
As first reported a couple weeks ago, the incredibly popular Italian eatery is expanding to the North Slope after working out a deal with Press' owners, who decided not to renew their lease. The space has been stripped of all fixtures as it undergoes its transformation into the new sandwich shop, which will very closely resemble the original location on Seventh between Seventh and Eighth Streets (another is in the works out on Coney Island).
No official opening date has been set yet, but they're looking to open as soon as possible, most likely within a couple weeks.

Can't wait to see what the "Expanded Menu" holds. While there is a hell of a lot that will be missed from Press 195, options for those not looking for a big Italian sandwich are going to be great. Some actual salads and meal-sized veggie items that go beyond the sides Zito's features on 7th Ave. will go a long way here.
Hey Zito's Fellas...throw a sandwich with chorizo on your menu!!
Ten years gone and we love Park Slope for all the support. Thanks for the kind words and its great to hear we will be missed. Be on the look out for our next store, plans are in the works. Check us out at www.facebook,com/press195 for updates.
Thanks!

Zito's is great, but we will miss Press 195 SO MUCH! The beet salad or an eggplant with smoked gouda press, and a glass of riesling.... loved the space, the staff were just the right mix of friendly and grumpy to make you feel at home... so sad it's gone.
Brian, thank you so much for ten years of great sandwiches and awesome fries. While we love Zito's, make no mistake about it, it will never, ever replace Press 195.
They are an italian sandwich shop, and I for one would love for them to stay that way. Not adding chorizo or smoked gouda....
My stars, ParkSlopePerson! Whatever will you do when no-frills italian sandwich shop, Zito's Coney, offers up its hot dog sandwich?!
Heard a rumor that Press 195 left because Zito's made them a sweet enough offer to do so. Would love to know if true or not, especially considering that I've found Zito's sandwiches to be entirely underwhelming. Too much plain bread and not enough flavor.
Perhaps true, but I did see a picture of what looked exactly like Press 195's patio as a listing at least a year ago. Zito's may have sealed the deal, but it seems to me like they were on the market for a while.
Oh I think my anger in this case is more directed to Press than Zito's for selling out (literally?). Can't imagine they closed shop because they weren't making enough money.
I will miss that meatloaf and mashed potato offering. That was pretty decadent. God luck in the future, Brian.
