Closed for Business: Trade Winds Imports, 440 Bergen Street
Friday, June 29, 2025 at 2:06PM Trade Winds, the furniture store on the corner of Fifth and Bergen, closed up shop earlier this week after a lengthy liquidation sale. The space has been cleared out, signage taken down, and the space is ready to be leased.
The store, which specialized in run of the mill wood furniture and bathroom fixtures, has held down this corner for several years. No word on what forced them to close up shop, but the word "arenafication" comes to mind as more and more older, less-flashy businesses are driven from the north end of the avenue.

They used to also have a store on 7th Ave
It really wasn't all that great quality. The one on 7th seemed slightly better, but now it's Venelle Salon. This is a prime corner just down from the subway so I imagine it will lease quickly.
I don't believe arenafication applies here. The store had mediocre stuff at poor prices. Probably more a victim of Ikeafication than anything else.
Yeah, as much as these Gothic Cabinet-type places seem great in concept, the quality's always pretty shitty. The only value is in getting something custom-made. Won't be missed too much.
This place had two levels, though. Across from arena. Did I hear Shake Shack? I think I did.
What do you mean 2 levels? It looks like it has apartments on the 2nd floor, no?
IIRC, there were steps in here which led to a loft-like second level with more furniture, perhaps not something you'd see in this screenshot.
Yes clearly having thousands more potential customers stream past your store is definitely a reason to close....
I actually purchased a captains bed there about two weeks ago. It was a floor model and we got it at a decent price. The salesperson/owner said that they were closing in a week for renovation and RE OPENING. What else would he have said?"Well glad you are buying this bed but if there is a problem forget about finding me because we are outta here." Frankly, I realized in the moment that they would not re-open but took a chance. The bed was delivered, works and cost not too much so was willing to take my chances. I have a few other small pieces bought from them over the years that are fine. It isn't likeI decorated the house exclusively from the store but for what it was they were ok.
And now... Bar? Restaurant? Phone Store?
I just want to note that I'm sitting at a desk purchased at Trade Winds (I think on 7th Ave) over 8 years ago. It was butt cheap and is still pretty damn solid despite my years of abuse (i.e., ejaculating onto it with a dangerous level of frequency). Farewell sweet Trade Winds.
Could be that the lack of quality caused the close at least in part. I bought a bed there and it was supposed to be "solid maple." It is clearly veneer over plywood. When I called to complain I mentioned the veneer and they said well yes it was veneer over "solid wood." Then I mentioned the clearly visible (thanks to the delivery guys dragging it along the cement) plywood and they said...uh yeah...solid plywood. WHAT!?!?!
I think they just stopped being able to carry any kind of quality product recently.
Not a fan.
They had great apartment sized sofas there. Anyone know the brand (made in NC, I think)? I was about to purchase one, can't find any link to them.
