Oko Space to Become Hair & Nail Salon
Friday, August 10, 2012 at 8:18AM
When Oko Frozen Yogurt, which was located on Fifth Avenue between Douglass and Degraw Streets, closed down in November of last year, there was much speculation about what would become of this prime North Slope storefront. Then a new restaurant called Chez Bibis Burger Bar began to take shape there in February, and many lamented the fact that there were already more than enough burger places in the area (especially once Burger Bistro announced less than a week later that it would be opening across the street). Those plans fell through though, most likely after some standard due dilligence, and the space has sat empty since.
Well, it looks like the next tenant to take over the storefront will be abother type of business that there's no shortage of around here: a hair and nail salon. Many thanks to a tipster for sending in the photo, which shows their signage being installed yesterday. Looks like it'll be called Silky.

Diversity and heterogeneity is the hallmark of Seventh Ave.
Let's get a few more real estate offices and FroYo places in there.
This is 5th Avenue.
Ugh...I thought Chez Bibi sounded like something I didn't want...now I wish this were a Chez Bibi.
I give it a year. I just can't see a cheesy hair salon doing well right there.
Are you kidding me? In all the years I've lived here the one thing that ALWAYS doe well...good economy or not...are hair and nail salons. Chez Bibi sounded terrible. This is useful for many people. What, did you need another boutique? What about this says "cheesy" to you? The sign looks better than 90% of hair salons around here.
I can't think of the last time a nail and hair salon went out of business....they do quite well. The neighborhood can't be all coffee shops, bars and overpriced boutiques...we do need some services too.
YES! I was just saying what Park Slope needs is another nail salon.
Eric - if this is in fact you, I'm shocked by your reaction. These nail salons are usually started and staffed by minorities and recent immigrants. They are small and locally owned business that are filling a need. Perhaps you would have preferred a Starbucks. Maybe you would be less cynical if the employees used a bike lane to get to work?
There are a ton of hair and nail places on 5th avenue close to this location. Doesn't seem like the right location for another business of this type. I honestly can't wait for this place to fail, just to see if something uniquely beneficial to the area will open up.
across the street, at Sterling and 5th, there are two nail salons in one building.
.....but the one that also has a full bar doesn't seem as packed as I thought it would be. What gives.
Whatever on this. Just another storefront I'll gloss over as I walk by.
