Toys for Seventh Avenue, Bagels for Fifth

I got word from a couple tipsters over the weekend that two new businesses have introduced themselves to the neighborhood: a bagel shop that's in the works in the space last occupied by El Pollo on Fifth between First and Second Streets, and a new toy store that's coming to the former Park Florist space, on Seventh between First and Garfield.

There's not much info out there yet about Beygl, but according to the signage that went up in the front windows they'll be serving breakfast and lunch, and the "gourmet deli" will offer catering and delivery ("Beygl" is the old Yiddish word for bagel).

And further up the hill, a toy store called Norman and Jules is on the way, from the husband-and-wife duo of Courtney Ebner and Avi Kravitz, who live in the neighborhood and have a young daughter. According to the sign, the shop will have "a focus on handcrafted and imaginative toys, decor and art."

Isn't the toy store coming to the former Eyes on the Slope space between Garfield and 1st? The former Park Florist is between Garfield and Carroll, no? I think something else is coming there, paper is up in the window.

Or maybe I'm wrong and wherever I read that it said it was Eyes on the Slope was incorrect.

We have some pretty bad bagels down this way in Park Slope. I'm hopeful that Beygl changes that.

Some loser making a comment about how bagel hole is the best bagel place ever and I should schlep myself the 20 blocks to get them in 5, 4, 3.......

i really like bagel market's bagels (and food) - but i think that their attitude has gone way downhill in the past year (i mean, have free wi-fi and then put signs up everywhere saying that no one can sit in the seat longer than 15 minutes? also, the prices seem to be on a steady incline.

Bagel Hole ARE the best bagels in the city (that's the bagel they sell at Russ & Daughters) but that's too far too walk from here. Agree that this seems like a nice addition. There's already a great toy store right there on 7th called AREA. One thing PS doesn't need are more toy stores.

I like Bagel Market too. I hadn't noticed any changes with regard to wifi or prices. They are always so incredibly friendly and the food is good. I wish they'd stay open later. 7pm is too early. That's the kind of place that could make money on their make your own salad bar well into the evening. If they need business, opening till 9 or 10pm would make a huge difference. As for the wifi, it's a bagel shop. I bet people try to use it as their office and stay all day like in coffee shops, which is just totally unacceptable, sorry.

That's a precious letter. And a very cute kid's name, Charley.

I like BOTH Bagel Hole and Bagel Market a ton. All things equal, Bagel Hole's my favorite NYC bagel AND I can them at Hungry Ghost and not have to walk all the way to the South Slope.

However, Bagel Market does fill my yearning for the type of non-purist bagel I enjoyed before I moved to NYC. Their cream cheeses are to die for.

Bagel Hole's bagels and Bagel Market's imagination together would make for the perfect bagel.

As for the toy store, I welcome a place where I'm not actually buying the same 20 toys every other parent unknowingly has, then watching my kid enjoy either a cardboard box AND/OR BEER HALL PATRON more.

Ari Kravitz? Same owner as Casa Ventura? Interesting. Branching out!

Had take-out once from Casa Ventura. Liked what I got. Place looks great as well.

Hi everyone,

Norman & Jules will be located at 158 Seventh Avenue. Former home of the Park Florist.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Avi
