Signage Up at Barclays Center

The day is fast approaching when the city's newest arena, The Barclays Center. will open its doors at the intesection of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, most likley changing the area for better or worse. Construction is progressing on a daily basis, and on Friday the big letters went up.

Many thanks to a reader for sending the above photo along.

There may be an arena somewhere in the world with more obnoxious and ostentatious signage, but off the top of my head, can't remember where it may be!!!

90% of arena's in the country have signage similar to this. Some people will find any reason to complain, even when it's totally irrational as many are about this place. It looks fine. It's an arena, not a museum.

After all, we live in a capitalist society and NYC has always been about commerce and profit. This arena is a paean to Barclays, an upright corporate backer of NYC society. God bless them, may their taxes continue to fund our artisanal farmers markets.

And what about that rusty patina?

The most important sentence from the Times:

"Weathering steel — often known by its old brand name, Cor-Ten — develops a fine layer of rust, which then acts as a protective coating against moisture, slowing its own corrosion process almost to a stop. While it can look suspiciously unfinished to the casual observer, it has many fans in the world of art and architecture."

Get ready for the RAP & Rock-n-Roll Concerts and all that entails thereafter.... (NOTE to self) Move to South Slope... Awaaay from 5th avenue.

Imagine living next to Yankee stadium.

And here (Just Schlopin) is a prime example of irrational behavior:

Yankee Stadium seats 53,325 people.
Barclays Arena seats 18,000 people.

The line up so far includes Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Justin Beiber, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins and Jay Z to open. If you're scared of that line up in any way, you should move to South Dakota, not South Slope.

Youre scared of Barbara Streisand and Justin Beiber, hahahaha

@ Liza & Jbob:

Bieber and Babs scare me to the death. ~ I know GOTTA move now!!

Jbob - I know you'll be the first in-line for that Bieber concert since you have his first two albums on your iPod & "Never Say Never" on DVD.

Liza - Watch the crime-rate Spike-up with those Barbara Streisand fans who've been known to TEAR-UP a Williams Sonoma. Those Middle-aged ladies need to chill-out!
