Joe's Shoe Repair Gutted

It's been a very long time since we've seen any action inside the scaffolded space that was last home to Joe's Shoe Repair, on Fifth Avenue between Carroll and President Streets. In November 2007 the old-school business was forced out of its long time home, but the Fifth Avenue BID Committee found it a new storefront to set up shop in just a few doors down.

Since then, the original storefront, with its unique hand-painted sign, has sat vacant, right next door to the all-but-abandoned His and Hers Social and Athletic Club, another relic of Old Brooklyn. Over the weekend, though, something finally began stirring in the space. Workers have removed just about all of the interior, and have trashed it in a dumpster out front. Looks like steps are finally being taken to get a new tenant in this prime spot.

The Fifth Avenue BID has nothing to do with this. This building and the one Joe previously occupied are owned by the Fifth Avenue Committeee (FAC). FAC has nothing to do with the BID (except support it),

Hey FAC,

So why was it permitted to be in this state for so long? I thought it was another Nash prized possession.

Bill -
Frustrating, I'm sure. I'm not directly associated with FAC, but I believe the holdup was related to securing financing. The whole building is being renovated, not just the retail space.

There shouldn't be an empty storefront on 5th Ave. Glad to see some of these long dormant storefronts, hopefully, being put to good use.
