A Peek Inside Subway, Opening Next Week in the Old Leaf & Bean Space
Wednesday, September 26, 2024 at 2:10PM
Long-time fans of the old Leaf & Bean, brace your eyes: the outpost of sandwich chain Subway that's been under construction in the space, on Seventh between Berkeley and Union, is about to open, and the interior, which was unchanged for at least 50 years (going back to its days as a liquor store before Leaf & Bean opened in 1973), has been, shall we say, slightly altered.

The new interior looks, unsurprisingly, like the interior of every other Subway in the country, complete with glaring fluorescent light and a drab color scheme. The exterior has remained unchanged thanks to Landmark laws.
For the nostalgists out there, here's how the space looked back during the Leaf & Bean days (which have since resumed around the corner):

Coming Soon,
Destruction in
Food,
Storefronts

Are you a local business?

One word: NOPE.
This is going to be a hit.
Wow. They need to landmark the interiors, too. Hideous.
LOVE the dropped ceiling. So 1970's.
Very very sad. The only saving grace is they could not destroy the exterior of the shop. With any luck, Subway will fail at that location and another business with more respect for the unique architecture of the neighborhood will replace it and rebuild the interior of the store with something beautiful and appropriate.
Yes, wish the inside was landmarked also, that is disgusting what they did to the inside of that store
what a disaster..really hope it goes out of business quickly and is replaced with anything but another "Burger" joint.
Nauseating
I'm at a loss for words but hey if this is what people in the neighborhood want then I guess it will thrive. It will fit right in with the other stores on Union Street that are also national chains (Charles Schwabb, that shoe store and the eyewear place).
Hurts the eyes and everything else.
also;
Did i hear that Union Market is opening an outpost at the old Sette place on 7th, between 3rd and 4th?
Is that just to destroy the great little cheese shop that is next door or is the one on 6th too far for some?
Without any drama or hoopla....THANKS.....Thanks for the laughs, the fun and the 4 years plus !
