Open for Business: Kahawa Cafe, 557 Fifth Avenue

The coffee shop that's been in the works on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 15th Street quietly opened for business last month. It's a simple, no-frills place, serving up quality coffee, free wifi, and solid baked goods.
Kahawa (Arabic for coffee) is run by the same owners as the Park Slope Gourmet Deli directly across 15th Street. They're known for their friendliness, and that welcoming spirit is on display here too.
The cafe seats about 20 and is simply appointed with some tables and chairs and a few display cases. Coffee is from Illy, and the pastry selection is pretty much what you'd expect, the usual assortment of croissants, scones, danishes, cakes, lemon tarts, and biscuits. Lots of the items on offer are made in house, including red velvet and almond Twinkies.

The iced coffee is really good. And are the red velvet twinkies.
It certainly is no-frills, which unfortunately also makes it uninviting. I don't understand why they could not add some slightly nicer furniture and decorate a little. It looks very utilitarian. Although I live within a block, I have yet to go in and instead walk past it to 7th to meet friends.
I really want this place to succeed, but they took the convenience store approach to coffee shops: but some functional display cases and useable, efficient furniture.
Illy Coffee, hahahahaha.........
