Sweet Melissa Patisserie Is Most Likely Closed for Good (UPDATE: It Is.)

Sweet Melissa Patisserie, the bakery/ cafe that's been on Seventh between First and Second Streets since 2006, closed unexpectedly earlier this week. All signs point to it being shut down for good: all signage has been completely removed (even scraped off of the front window), windows are papered over, and a commenter on Park Slope Stoop noted that "they have moved all their inventory including all food items into the backyard." The Facebook and Twitter pages also haven't been updated in weeks. Sounds pretty darn closed, right?
Well, not so fast. There was also a sign in the window:
So what's the deal? Would an "electrical problem" really necessitate taking pains to scrape painted lettering from the front window and remove a heavy wooden sign? Whatever happened happened quickly: a bread delivery was hanging on the door all day Tuesday too. I tend to give businesses the benefit of the doubt when they say they're temporarily closed, but this seems like an almost comically ridiculous bluff.
A commenter on FIPS checked in Tuesday night, and apparently the sign in the window had been taken down and a couple tables had "FREE" signs on them. Another added that kitchen appliances were hauled off in a moving truck.
I've reached out to owner Melissa Murphy and will update if I hear back, but based on the evidence it's hard not to think it's closed for good. Sad to see it go?
UPDATE: Many thanks to tipster Dave for sending in the above photo (click to enlarge), of a note from owner Melissa Murphy that was posted in the front window. In the note, she confirms the closure and notes that the business has "struggled to make ends meet for a while, ever since the economy dropped years ago, and we just couldn't hold on any longer."

Must have been FOOD TRUCKS!
Place was terrible.
Let's get a good bakery in there.
Figures they'd be the lying and saying they're renovating when they are actually closed for good kinda place.
Place was tired, and without their Cobble Hill location its easier to move on. Its a good size space in the heart of the Slope and across from 321-about as prime a location as can be. Anyone know anything about the landlord? A great bakery would be great but I fear without a considerate landlord this could go south fast.

This is what we need.
Really wish you would defer speculative postings until you know the truth.
Just saying.
Now, do a review of the new Japanese place at 7th Ave. and 3rd St.
It's a keeper.
SEPHORA MOVING IN TO SWEET MELISSA SPACE!
Id love to see a place like this one move in

Man, I really loved their cabbage soup :-(
Not really sad to see this place go -- was tired, needed a reboot and better baker. I will be sad if it gets replaced with either a chain store or another bad Asian/Thai/Chinese/Sushi restaurant.
I snagged a couple of their pies for Thanksgiving once, a bit pricey but delicious.
Fudrucker's time.
If were going there- Chilis beats Fudruckers hands down
Always enjoyed but I think L'albero Dei Gelati is the new improved version
I'd be happy with either, Shopsin, though I'd prefer a Beef O'Brady's.
There is literally *nowhere* to get a decent burger in this neighborhood. Ugh.
Park Slope Stoop confirms they are closed for good.
So another example of lying first, then having to tell the truth when you're outed.
GOOD RIDDENS LIARS!!!
A bit hostile, are we Rick?
Does it really matter that a restaurant posts a sign saying they're repairing the wiring or fixing the plumbing when, in fact, they are dunz-o? Will the world stop spinning on its axis? Will the health of the uninsured be adversely affected? Will the force of gravity suddenly disappear?
Since someone mentioned it, what about the post yesterday that Sephora was moving to Triangle Sports - the post disappeared. Is it untrue?
And, it should be "GOOD RIDDANCE, LARS"
riddens should be riddance
liars should be Lars, the real owner of Melissa's.
Lars Ulrich is a Fudrucker's fan. I think that bodes well for our hopes here.
Read the new letter on Sweet Melissas window (its up on Park Slope Stoop) and then chill on the condemnation. Theres a line between legitimate criticism and nastiness.
However tired it became, Sweet Melissa was warmly embraced by PS when it opened and was widely praised for the first few years.
They had the absolute worst service of any bakery I've ever been to.
And the baked goods themselves were average on a good day. I think even Crumbs may be better than this place was. And Crumbs is a joke.
Good thing we have a number of other bakeries around, but I do think a Bien Cuit or Mayon Kayser would do great in there.
There are a lot of mediocre businesses in Park Slope and very few high quality ones. I am not happy a mediocre one closed because that's someone's dream ending, but this place really wasn't good at all sorry to say. Hope they find peace with the closure and that something better takes its place.
Come on Chipotle!!!
I'm starting to like this JBob guy. Never did before, but he's become my kind of softhearted dude of late. Agreed: it is sad that the small business person is finding it harder and harder to make it in the current environment. We can curse greedy landlords all we want, but they're just responding to the marketplace. Charge $100 psf rent? Why, if we can charge $150 psf.
But, there are real estate cycles. Enough businesses closing down, leaving landlords with vacant properties for a few months and we may see a downward drift in prices.
I would not welcome national chains. But, some are inevitable.
SEPHORA TO TRIANGLE SPORTS.
