Dragonfly Boutique to Close December 1
Monday, November 18, 2024 at 7:47AM
Dragonfly Boutique, the shop specializing in mostly women's tops and Mexican-influenced jewerly and accessories on Fifth Avenue between Lincoln and St. Johns, will be closing by the end of the month, according to owner Umberto. "It just wasn't working out," he added.
The shop opened to little fanfare in April, and never really gained a foothold among the many other boutuques on this stretch of Fifth. Umberto sold a nice selection of women's clothes, but his selection of other items, including scarves and handcrafted Mexican-inspired jewelry and art, are surprisingly some of the finest you'll find in the neighborhood.
There's a sale going on right now, and just about everything except for the most expensive artwork is deeply discounted. Umberto is hoping to reopen in Cobble Hill, but will need to basically start from scratch. Why not do some early Christmas shopping at Dragonfly before it closes and help him out?

'The shop opened to little fanfare'
Yes that's true. I sent in multiple tips about this place opening and the opening was never reported.
The constant critique is getting tired, Sterling. Why don't you just start your own blog already?
For shame. Hate to see anyone lose moneyt on their dream. Too many small boutiques, though. Too many thrift stores. It's an oversaturation point unless you really stand out. Hard to stand out in that small a space. I bet that burlesque-y boutique down the block is doing slightly better, and it's hard not to do well with the big windowed space the place on the corner there on St. Johns has.
In fairness, sterling did mention this place in this link below, but it never did get written up anywhere besides parkslopestoop. It's difficult for any new business, but when it doesn't even get a write up on a local blog, there's no hope for it to be picked up by one of the larger blogs like racked. Without word of mouth (which is what these blogs create) it's very difficult. Maybe sterling just cares about these places and wants to see them succeed. I don't see it as being negative to want a new business to have gotten some love.

@Sterling and Ina- Your efforts aside, its really up to the business to promote itself, that's part of being a successful business. Its no coincidence how many businesses get nice coverage , inc photos, in blogs such as this one because they make the effort to reach out to the bloggers, and invite them into their stores/restaurants. Notwithstanding the pun, "Build it and they will come" only works for strip joints
It also should be said that this blog does not have the scope of a Park Slope Stoop or Brownstoner, who are able to cover much more ground. It's updating much less frequently, and the choice of stories is questionable at best. So much other news, but here's something on the new Sephora signs on Triangle Sports, without even reading the fine print? How often has he even walked by that spot to not notice the revolving signage?
Some solid blog coverage can go a long way for these businesses, though.
Brownstoner and Parkslopestoop/Southslopenews are commercial enterprises. Here's Park Slope is a hobby blog ran by a single individual in their spare time. Give the guy a break.
Honestly, if you can't even be bothered to have someone proofread your window signage ("Sumer Sale?" Seriously? That shit hung there for weeks!), you can't be surprised when people are skeptical about your store. These things matter, particularly in such a crowded market. I feel bad for this guy, but c'mon - you gotta hold yourself to certain standards if you want to have a successful business.
Actually, no, I won't give him a break since his "stories" wind up being picked up by those bigger, better blogs. Misinformation is created out of incompetence, and that may actually one day mess up someone's business.
If he can't read the not-so-fine print on the Sephora sign on the Triangle building, and doesn't even walk around there enough to notice the switching advertising, he has no business blogging about the neighborhood.
What are you, the Internet Police? Are you going to have this blog destroyed because of a few inaccuracies? Holy smokes, man. Find something else a bit more productive to do with your time.
Except isn't it the responsibility of those "bigger" blogs to fact check something posted by someone keeping up with things as a hobby? Fuck off, Ted Nelson.
