O'Connor's Constuction is Actually Progressing; Facade Revealed

In the year and a half since O'Connor's, on Fifth between Bergen and Dean, closed for renovations. The classic dive bar hadn't changed much in its 81 years of existence, which unfortunately worked to its disadvantage: it wasn't nearly up to code, and an attempt to construct a basement resulted in the collapse of the back wall. So owner Mike Maher shut it down, started the renovation, and apparently promptly ran out of money, and the space has seemingly been lying dormant since.

Signs of life are actually happening, however; many thanks to a tipster for sending in the above photo, which looks like the beginning of a reveal of the facade (that sidewalk shed was quite an eyesore). It looks pretty traditional, similar to 200 5th's, with lots of windows and not a trace of the old brick front.

For fans of the old O'Connor's, it would be best to expect that the new one is going to look completely different from what we were used to.

I wouldn't get too excited. I live across the street and a week before Thanksgiving I noticed makeshift 4x4's holding the plywood facade from collapsing forward onto the sidewalk. A week later the wooden support planks, along with the top of the construction facade, disappeared.

I was hopeful for signs of life, but after 3 or 4 weeks there hasn't been any changes or people seen going in or out. I think the plywood is just falling apart : (

I think the sidewalk shed collapsed. I don't think this was a reveal.

Definitely not a reveal. Not sure this place is ever going to reopen. Can you imagine all the lost $$$$ with now 2 entire seasons of basketball coming and going and this is the closest bar to Barclays. If they could just take out a loan to get this finished, they'd be raking it in hand over fist. GET IT OPEN!

Well that's disappointing!

I was walking past this the other day and a man walked out and behind him another worker.. I asked what was going on and he said he's building an irish pub and it should be opened soon so looks like its legit.

Pat O'Connor was a bartenders bartender ! He was the last of his generation bartenders who kept the old ways going ! TRUST ! Good luck to mike and the lads ! To many la-di-da yuppie & hipster bars ! They can use a real Irish bar on 5 ave !
