Mega Glass and Sashes Up for Rent

Mega Glass and Sashes, the family-run glass store on Fifth between St. Marks and Bergen, is on the market.
The storefront is up for lease at $13,500 per month, Park Slope Stoop found. The listing touts the proximity to the Barclays Center as well as stores like Lululemon, Bump, Sun in Bloom, and 67 Burger, and notes that "all uses will be considered."
Mega Glass, which specializes in windows as well as custom-cut glass, has been owned by the Garrastegui family since 1972, and before that it was owned by the Swir family for 60 years, since 1912. This place has been a glass workshop for a shockingly long time, and it's evident: I had the chance to check it out a few years ago, and it really seems as if the only changes that have been made in the ensuing years have been the addition of a TV and a laptop; even the glasscutting tools are essentially the same ones that were used in the beginning. It's one of the few craftsman's workshops left in the neighborhood, let alone in a prime spot on a major avenue. Shame it most likely won't be around for much longer.

Look at some of their feedback on consumer review sites. They should have sold the business years ago. Papa Garrastegui is a grumpy old man who makes his customers feel like intruders. Quality of their workmanship has slipped markedly. Sorry, this is one old-time family business that disappoints.
Kick em to the curb for some high price cocktail joint!
Kick em to the curb for a Dale Talde pizza joint.
I recently needed some custom glass and, since this is so close, I looked online for reviews. Mostly negative, some completely indifferent, and some cited very poor quality. Ended up going with a place further down on 4th Ave and wasn't disappointed. I'm all for a workshop replacing it (although I doubt it will happen with that rent), but one that cares about customer satisfaction.
I'll take and Arby's or a Pizza Hut (but only if they can work in the red roof design).
***Always wondered why that place had so much staying power.... Lived here since '96 and never had a need to go in the there. Business just seemed out of place with the neighborhood....
Barclays Center has claimed another casualty.****
May the best frozen yogurt win.
Watch out Gorilla here comes Starbucks
It is one of the cooler looking interiors in the neighborhood. Real blast from the past that gives you a look as to how north 5th looked before the big boom, or what most of the South Slope will look like from here to eternity.
I kind of wish there was still a place for spots like this once every few blocks, at least, but that's not where life is headed for now. Folks are going to try to get that slice of the arena pie, and then places like the Skybox will come along and ensure they don't get it. Kind of amazing to watch the Machavelli Sports Bar on Pacific that tried to be an early adopter already close shop and see how it would have been dwarfed by what's coming next to it.
used them many times over the past 29 years to repair and replace windows. they were straight forward and honest and old school masters of all things brownstone windows. god bless j and r appliance and brooke vacuum on 7th avenue because once they go it wil be a victory for the big box stores, and amazon and the death of knowledgeable storekeepers.
I have had a storefront building on 5th Avenue since 1980. I, for one, will miss this neighbor. When some young chap threw a rock through my window, I simply took out the sash and lugged it down the street and they did a fine job of fixing it quickly. I cannot believe the comments posted here. I hope they are ironic. With every dollar you spend you define your culture. Vote with your dollars for family-owned businesses, or there will soon be none left. It breaks my heart to look at the displacement of our small businesses in the neighborhood with bars and bar restaurants. Soon we will really be a run down stadium neighborhood.
Can't bars and restaurants also be family-owned? Or does your bias not allow you to consider that possibility?
