Morgan's BBQ Gets its Liquor License

The area's newest barbecue restaurant, Morgan's, opened on the corner of Flatbush and St. Marks earlier this month, bringing classic Texas barbecue to the neighborhood. The smoker is manned by Franklin BBQ alum Joh Avila, and he's turning out quality brisket (both lean and fatty), pulled pork, ribs, chickens, turkey, and sausage, with sides including giant stuffed baked potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and baked beans.

It's a very fine interpretation of the Texas style, which is peppery and sauceless, and standouts include the brisket (which Texas barbecue is most famous for) and ribs. Sandwiches are available during the week (as well as all evening long at Elbow Room, the connected take-out window dishing up wildly creative macaroni and cheese, and there's plenty of draft beer to be had at the bar and a big outdoor seating area. The one thing it's been missing has been liquor, but not any more: the license came in on Friday.

The liquor program is being managed by Kier Hamilton, who bartends there a few nights a week and also happens to be the master distiller down at Widow Jane Whiskey, which is based in Red Hook. He told me that he's currently placing orders for more than 100 varieties of Bourbon and other brown spirits, which should be stocking the shelves within a few weeks (there's plenty of Widow Jane to be had at the moment, however, and it's good stuff).

It's hard to leave Morgan's without being very impressed by both the layout and the food, and the barbecue served here is a completely different animal, style-wise, from what you'll find at Dinosaur, Fort Reno, or Fette Sau.

Olive Garden? This is getting ridiculous, folks. They don't bring in frozen food and pop it into the microwave for service. It's getting real BBQ snobby in here.

Actually, Olive Garden has gotten much better over the years. I might feed it to my dog now. I'd definitely feed Dino to my dog.

I don't think the thread is ridiculous. I've read the whole thing now and I think it's just opinions, but not ridiculous. And the shoe guy also had a legitimate question: Is it a place a non-meat eater could go with meat eaters and just eat sides so they could all hang out and maybe drink together."

I can't answer that, since I've never been there, but from a pure interest in how ALL the food is, I wonder if anyone can answer the question. I'd personally eat meat, but are the sides any good and what else do they serve? I prefer a well balanced meal with my dead, tasty bbq animals.

Holy crap. That was some amazing bbq. Huzzah.

Been to Morgan's twice, place has potential but, understandably, not hitting on all marks yet. Meat (brisket and ribs) was slightly lacking in smoke flavor and the ribs were overdone and completely coming off the bone. They also go heavy with the pepper in the rub, you may or may not like that. Sausage was pretty good. Collard greens were awesome, some of my favorite. Had a chopped brisket sandwich at lunch from the take out counter. Served on a hamburger bun w/ cole slaw and sauce already on the sandwich, the thing was a complete soggy mess by the time I walked 5 min. back to my office. Stick to dinner for now. I think with time going to see improvement in the meat and will be a great option. Right now I still find Dinosaur to be a better option given the consistency of their product but time will tell and I will certainly be back.

Yeah Phil. And he NAMED THE PLACE AFTER HIMSELF TOO!

Who does that? <sarcasim alert>

My experience so far: Morgan's was great and Elbow Room was insultingly bad. It's hard to screw up mac 'n cheese, but they somehow managed it.

But the food and service at Morgan's were excellent.

Ok been to both now, Morgans wins generally on the brisket but dinosaur is just better on sides and it has a larger menu .

There's clearly room for both each has merit.

@ BaDaBing--You want to talk about him using his own name. You don't have enough balls to use your own name in the comment. And who comes up with BaDaBing (gay) & @ Phil- Who in there right mind uses the word douche baggery? You sound like a real winner!! Why don't you two losers grow up and give him a chance instead of judging. I am sure he won't be losing sleep over your comments. The place is awesome and he has worked very hard to get this. Before you start passing judgement and showing by your mentality you two will probably be sweeping the floors there one day! LOSERS

This post is starting to develop cobwebs.

Funny that McKenzie judges others on their use of words but then describes their use of these words as "gay" -Sounds like ANOTHER winner. Or loser, rather. Nice work out there people! Keep up the love.

Called Morgan's at 7:15 to see if they still had any meat left. Was told they did. I got there at 8pm and they only had brisket and sausage left. Needless to say I guess I should have been more specific about what meat they had, but still...clue me in guys.

Wound up going to Fort Reno and was not overly impressed. Had the ribs, which were cooked well, but lacked enough seasoning.

Looking forward to going back to Morgan's, albeit earlier in the day when they have some options.

Been to Dino but not Morgan's yet. I thought it was vrey good BBQ, the sides were terrific and the portions were large but good (who complains about overly large portions? Nearly every quality restaurant I've been to in BK in the last few years offers high prices and ridiculously small portions). it is great for familes and large groups and best of all, they take reservations for groups of ALL sizes. Does Morgan's? I refuse to wait an hour for dinner anywhere in the neighborhood.
