Closed for Business: Leske's Bakery, 588 5th Avenue

Some sad news to report from the very southern end of the neighborhood: Leske's Bakery, which moved into the space on 5th Avenue between 16th and Prospect that has been home to a bakery for more than a hundred years last year, shut down on December 27th.

The bakery was a Bay Ridge import, and the original is renowned for its black and white cookies, donuts (especially the peanut butter and jelly), and Scandinavian treats like kringlers, bollers, and kransekake. It closed after 50 years in 2011, only to rise from the dead a year later in the original location under new ownership.

This spot was last home to Sweet Treasures Bakery (which Brooklyn Bread briefly shacked up with after closing), before that it was Three Star Bakery for many years, and the building has been home to a bakery basically since it was built. While there's no word yet on what's moving in (the bakery's owners placed a notice on the door saying that the closure was due to "rising costs"), Leske's hopefully will be re-opening somewhere in the neighborhood; they're currently "evaluating."

This was the best bakery in PS. Unfortunately its location had very limited foot traffic-not nearly enough to sustain it. Those Kringles were out of this world.

Their product was great but from outside it looked just like about 10 other 5th avenue bakeries. This place had the meanest jelly donut I ever ate.

January 3, 2025 | Unregistered Commenterombudsman

Oh no! Their blackout cake was AMAZING!

January 3, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterNever Satisfied

Well, they can't move it any further south without having to serve tortas. Ayayay!

Assuming the "rising costs" are rent related -- land lords on that end of 5th are eager to raise their PPSF to match prime locations further north even though the area can't support it (yet).

January 3, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterMan of Both Slopes

It never will support them. People who live in the South Slope are hangers-on who want to tell others they live in Park Slope, but can't really afford it. This is why they all shack up with roommates, etc., despite having low-paying jobs that should really have them living elsewhere. It's why the South Slope will never resemble anything more than a failing-to-gentrify neighborhood. It's not Park Slope. Park Slope, perhaps, should end at around where Talde is on 11th St.

Wow, KBob. I don't live in South Slope or PS, but if you're any indication of what the "real Park Slope" crowd is like, I can't imagine why anyone would want to be associated with such a snobbish, classist group of jerks.

January 5, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterCB

It's true that if Leske's opened in North slope on 7th avenue they'd be rolling in money. They simply needed more foot traffic because their product was superb. Really a shame to see them go.

Would love to see Kbob in person - pretty safe bet he's bald and short

Their Napoleons for 2 bucks a piece were to die for. Now, it looks like I have to go to Bay Ridge for them. I don't know how they made a profit from selling it.

You can't really compare the area around 5th and Prospect to 7th and 11th. The former has a completely different feel and aesthetic to it that's more aligned with "Greenwood" or Sunset Park. I'm not sure that anyone who lives in that general vicinity thinks they live in Park Slope proper. 7th and 11th, or up to 15th or 16th between 6th and PPW is decidedly Park Slope whether you agree or not. Rental prices and PPSF are certainly commensurate with those in the North Slope. Speaking of which, I know a couple of guys who shacked up with roommates and got priced out of Prospect Heights and moved to precious "prime Slope" on Garfield b/w 8th & PPW for $200 less a month.

Park Slope is a HUGE neighborhood which is why you can often find deals on apartments. You can rent a nice 2 bedroom in Prime Park Slope for $1000 less than you would find in many other nice Brooklyn neighborhoods just because the neighborhood is just so much larger than all the rest.

"You can rent a nice 2 bedroom in Prime Park Slope for $1000 less than you would find in many other nice Brooklyn neighborhoods just because the neighborhood is just so much larger than all the rest."

$1,000 less? That's a silly exaggeration, Tim. Example? I get your supply and demand theory, but that's not how it plays out in practice. Even if the areas were relative in size, Prospect Heights and (western) Crown Heights, have a certain cachet with the gentrifying crowd, and as such, they're more hip and desirable than the entirety of Park Slope at the moment.

January 6, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterMan of Both Slopes

You can get a decent (not luxurious, but decent) 2 bedroom in Park Slope for $2500 if you look.

The same 2 bedroom in Greenpoint would be at least $3200 and in Williamsburg would be $3500 minimum.

January 6, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterTim

When was the last time you looked for a 2 bedroom in Park Slope, Tim? 2500 will get you a cramped piece of shit. Trust me on that one, chief.

January 7, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterMan of Both Slopes

I live in a 2 bedroom with a fireplace, washer/dryer, 800 square feet in a walk up brownstone apartment on a named street a block off prospect park. I found it about 9 months ago for $2450.

Like I said, it can be done. When I was looking I saw apartments just like this in Prospext heights even that were $800 more than this place for the exact same layout. Park slope has lots more inventory than other neighborhoods thus the deals.

You don't need to be condescending chief. I know what I'm talking about too.

January 7, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterTim

I also live in a 2 bed (with a yard) for under 2500 a month. rented it in the last 3 months. I'm near 6th Avenue in North Slope. It's neither "cramped" nor a "piece of shit" in fact I love it. Found it on craigslist and didn't pay a broker fee.

January 7, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterStacy

People who pay "market rate" for these apartments you see listed $3800 for a 2 bedroom etc are either lazy or stupid.

Of course you can find nice apartments for under $2500 a month, you just have to know where to look and ask around.

Man of Both Slopes you sound like a real estate broker.

We own our place thankfully, but we just helped a cousin find a place on our block (a beautiful 1 bedroom) for $1400 a month. When I see people paying $2000 and up for a 1 bedroom around here it just makes me sad that the brokers have duped people into thinking that that's what you should pay.

January 7, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterSterling

Not a broker, Sterling. Yes, they're driving up the prices for renters in all of BK, but you can't blame them. They wouldn't be in business if there wasn't a market for the units they list. $1,400 for a small one bedroom is a good deal, but it's much easier to find a reasonable 1br vs. a TRUE 2 bedroom. In that regard, Stacy and Sterling, I'd be interested to see the dimensions of your bedrooms or get more background on your building and/or specific location. Tim, your landlord is renting at a discount because if your place is as nice as it sounds, they can easily rent it for a lot more unless there are some caveats with the place. How were you able to find such a good deal? Please also keep in mind that most places in PH or CH that command high rent are a mix of new construction or recently remodeled. I've seen plenty of value 2BRs in the slope (south slope in particular) for under $2500, but they're in disgusting repair or in decent shape but in a terribly maintained building.
