Is The New Ninth Street C-Town Signage a Union Market Rip-Off?

FIPS
The C-Town supermarket on 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues got some new signage recently, and FIPS is wondering if it's ripping off Union Market's design.
So to compare, here's what Union Market looks like.

The color scheme is pretty much spot-on, down to the olive green and the white outline, and the star is tough to ignore. The font may different, but it's hard to deny that Union Market's logo was certainly at least a reference image. It's also been re-christened Steve's 9th Street Market, which basically removes any doubt that Union market was certainly an influence.
For a little backstory, this building has one of the most illustrious histories of any in the neighborhood. It was home to the 2,400 seat RKO Keith's Prospect Theater from 1914 to 1967 (hosting the day's top acts - including The Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen, and Fanny Brice - and launching the careers of Three Stooges), and after that it sat empty for years before being gutted and converted into a supermarket and condos in the late 1980s.

Wow. Umm, yes totally. Steve's C-Town was great as it is. Why the need to change? It's still a C-town right?
Full disclosure - I moved to the NJ suburbs.
Who cares?
The clientele of the two businesses are (predominately) separate and distinct.
Not reallt, Marty. Union market is 1/4 the size of Steve's, and they don't carry everything one may need for a bigger shopping trip. I know many families who will go to Union Market for convenience and selection of luxury food goods, but also have to wander down to C - Town at some point during the week to grab things that Union doesn't carry. If Steve's fancies up just enough for that crowd and improves organic slections, I could see people opting to bypass Union Market all together. In reality, though, I think Whole Foods is clearly the competitive force that is causing Steve's to re - brand as Steve's and Union Market have coexisted for years. Many people in Gowanus would trek up to Steve's, but Whole Foods is closer and far superior, albeit much more expensive.
As the designer of the Union Market logo and branding, I'd like to think that it's a form of flattery that C-Town chose to use the Union Market branding as their inspiration. However, it's more likely that they chose not to hire a design firm to work on their rebranding and instead did a hack job of ripping off the Union Market brand.
Total rip off. Sad
It's a big improvement. The old sign was dated and gaudy. This one is cleaner, better, but a rip off.
Still, people likely won't be confused or anything. You go to StevesTown when you need general stuff, maybe some organic milk and cheaper eggs and your lucky charms. You go to Union Market when you want veggies, breads, artisanal goods and coffee beans, olives, and cheese if you can't make it to one of the real cheese shops.
Oh no! Those Center Slopers are going to be so confused now!
La Petite Fleur on 6th and Flatbush closed. Maybe just barely on the other side of the PH line, but an amazing little nook of a flower shop run by a tireless-albeit-grumpy woman. It survived the past decade of boom, but it's a business taken down by the great Barclays machine that didn't deserve to go. No good florists outside of the Center/South Slope. Far more worth the coverage here.
I'd be super p.o if I were Union Market
Valerie, You should bill Steve's for design services! I'm sure that you, personally, have no legal recourse, but I wonder if Union Market can send out some sort of cease and desist letter demanding that they alter their branding. I'd point to color scheme and the star logo as prime examples. Stellar job with the Union Market design, by the way. Their branded paper bags with the green star are immediately recognizable all over the city.
As if you expected anything original from that joint...
To quote Jerri Blank, "If you're gonna reach for a star, reach for the lowest one you can."
I'm having a hard time picturing where the "bakery" is in that store.
So, it's not a C Town anymore?
Wow... talk about trying to gin up a controversy where there is none... maybe step foot inside a joint occasionally and talk about what's inside.
Hahaha, Chris! Good one!
This is barely a blog at this point. A guy walks around and snaps a picture of something every few days. Sad that it even gets the commentary it does on here! All these losers need to go comment somewhere else where their opinions will actually matter.
Park Slope Stoop and Brownstoner do such a better job at covering what actually happens. This guy knows less about the Slope than someone sitting on their stoop sometimes.
Some market covering the poor part of the Slope gets a new awning!!!! OOOOOOOH. MAYBE IT'S A SEPHORA NOW?!?!?!
I really hope he has another dayjob and isn't taking up a seat at some coffee shop all day that could go to someone with actual work to do!
BREAKING NEWS: THIS DUDE'S SUCKS!!! I could run a site better than this guy in my sleep, but I have better things to do.
The poor part of the Slope? There's a poor part of Park Slope? LOL, 9th Street? Maybe you need to get out more and stop being so insulting to your neighbors and to the guy who runs this blog.
Simple answer to your problem, just click that little X at the top of your screen and don't come back here. Enjoy!
Brownstoner is a shill for the real estate industry. There's barely anything related to Park Slope on there, certainly none of the kinds of things that are reported here. Park Slope stoop is okay, but the new editor is not nearly as good as the previous one. This is a good place for neighborhood news, if you don't like it, go somewhere else. It says a lot more about you than it does about this blog that instead of just not reading and not commenting, you just here JUST to be rude and make nasty comments. That doesn't reflect on this blog or its owner at all, it reflects on YOU. And what it says is that you are a rude, ignorant person.
moved away from here a few year ago but always wondered who the f steve is. they could have put that money into getting better produce and doing some work on the inside of the store.
aaaaah, yeah this is obviously a branding rip off. That took less than 1 second to realize. But I have to say, I am perfectly fine with it. Its actually a surprise that this didn't happen sooner. Union Market is an overpriced luxury brand, name an industry where designer brands don't get knocked off...
@no-permits, maybe this "steve" is Chinese?
Also, the interior is improved as well, and I like that they got rid of all the "super special" signs that were blocking the windows. They actually did a good job with the makeover. I went in there for yogurt a week ago and I immediately texted my wife: "they redid c-town, looks a lot better inside and out"
@Ted Nelson - is that true regarding La Petite Fleur? I can't find any other neighborhood blog that mentions that. I agree with you - it's a real loss of they closed down. They were always a bit flaky, but they put together beautiful arrangements at reasonable prices. And aside from the flakiness, everyone there was a pleasure to deal with.
Wow. They both use a star in their logo. Big deal. Nobody is going to confuse one for the other. Steve's is a supermarket. Union is a food boutique. I think Steve's did a great job sprucing up the place. Probably feeling the pressure from Fairway and Whole Foods. Good for them!
LOL.. I think this supermarket has gone too far with its new banner ! If this is such an independently own retailer then, maybe we should upgrade its banner within the interior ! WHY?? its too SMALL , OLD and the floors are cracked . ME think chandalier and carpet ... hahah They , are making a union market { theory }
@ sloprestar .........Are you kidding me about the interior .. WHOA , its a dump , the floors are cracked , the aisles are stuffed with boxes that havent been shelved yet . You have too get a supermarket DMV liscense too drive and their express checkout .. hahaha seems too always have 2 ppl because one cannot PRICE items correctly so she/ he has a back-up . OH and that Giant electric wooden SAFE that totally takes up a whole entire area is scary ! Not too mention BOXES sitting in the window with groceries cooking in the sun too be delievered YUCK ... Sorry . This place upgrade its facade but inside its disgusting STILL
It looks like a disgruntled employee has found the page. Not sure what most of their post is talking about, but they probably should spend their time finishing high school rather than posting on blogs.
