Major Fire at Cog & Pearl on Fifth and Sackett

The building on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Sackett Street, home to the jewelry store Cog & pearl, caught fire last night, and it appears as if the whole building has sustained major damage.

Photos tweeted show a stretch of Berkeley Street filled with smoke and flame, and what appears to be a near-completely burned out building. I'll update with more information when it becomes available.

UPDATE: Many thanks to reader Brook for sending the below photo; the storefront has been completely boarded up as of this morning.

Saw Seth (C&P's owner) in the open doorway of his burned out storefront. Very upsetting for everyone. Went to Fleicher's later in the day and aside from the smell of smoke, which only added to the smokey meat smell of the place, they seemed to have been fortunate to avoid any damage. My thoughts go out to Seth and Kristin and hope they rebuild. They've been there since 2002, which as observed from the frequent closing of local shops due to raising rents, is a feat unto itself.
