City Sub Moving Up The Block, Possibly into Melt Space
Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 3:15PM
City Sub, the always-popular sandwich shop that's been on Bergen Street between Fifth and Flatbush Avenues for nearly 30 years, has been shuttered for the past few weeks. They're not closed for good, however; they're just moving into a new location on the same block, according to a sign posted in the front window.

The entire rest of the block from there on up to Flatbush is owned by Michael Pintchik, and while there's a chance that they might be moving into one of those "premium" properties, it seems much more likely that they're moving into the space next door that was last home to restaurant Melt. Not only was the space already a pre-existing restaurant, a new restaurant has been under construction inside it since March.
City Sub is one of the few businesses in the neighborhood that commands a line literally out the door on a near-daily basis, they also have the luxury of closing at 4:30 daily, except for Thursdays, when they're closed all day. Hopefully nothing gets lost in translation during the move; these are some good, old-school deli sandwiches.
Many thanks to reader Adam for sending in the photos.

I wonder if this is where J.Crew is opening.
City Sub *could* be moving into that former Level Kids place (the one painted purple) which just moved around the corner to Flatbush Ave. That's the only other storefront except Melt that's unoccupied on this block.
The news about Parm moving around the corner isn't going to help business here though even though I LOVE city sub and will continue to support them.
renovations or moves = closure. bye bye place.
Where they will FAIL. Duh.
Maybe this type of shop succeeded in the past, but it cannot compete with the better sandwich shops on 5th Ave. Where would you rather go, to a glorified Subway, or to Zito's, Beerkraft, or the Larder? The answer is simple.
JCrew should move into the Chiles and Chocolate space. A Gap Kids should open nearby as well, with Banana Republic taking over the Triangle Sports space. Gap Kids should go into the space where the store just burned down. This is how you build true anchors in a neighborhood.
You're an ignoramus, Eddard.
Gap Kids? Gap is one of the 20 worst performing chains in the last 5 years and have CLOSED 20% of their U.S. stores since 2009. It is one of the most poorly performing retailers on the scene right now.
Everything you spout is totally incorrect and ignorant. Zito's just CLOSED one of its 2 PS locations, meanwhile this place is so wildly successful they close at 4:30 every day.

NEW YORK – Gap plans to close stores in the U.S., while expanding in China
The struggling retailer, which runs the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic chains, detailed plans on Thursday to close 189 locations, or 21% of its namesake Gap stores in the U.S., by the end of 2013. At the same time, the largest U.S. clothing chain said it plans to triple the number of Gap stores in China from about 15 by the end of the year to roughly 45 by the end of next year.
The moves are related to the company's previously stated goal of reducing its overall square footage in the U.S. by 10 percent from 2007 to the end of 2013, while roughly doubling revenue from outside of the U.S. to 30 percent by the end of the same year.
@eddard you really are proving to have no clue by all of your posts
i walk right past Zito's, Beerkraft every week for lunch on my way to city sub and do not regret it ever.
When I walk past zito's there is barely anyone in it; city subs has a line out the door daily and have to close when they run out of bread.
People, Eddard is not being serious. They're clearly just trolling and trying to rile people up. Ignore the troll and it'll go away.
Oh man, this makes my day, if in fact they plan on re-opening in a new spot. I've lived here for 12 years and my husband grew up in Park Slope. City Sub has always been consistently great.
Fresh bread, fresh cold cuts, fresh toppings and fair pricing is what keeps ALL types of people coming back for more.
This is what a deli sandwich is supposed to be, not some fancy pants sandwich that costs you $12 and leaves you hungry for more an hour later.
I hope all the gaps close.
City Sub is great if you like QUANTITY over quality. Fluffy white bread and Boar's Head cold cuts. You can get the same exact thing at any good suburban supermarket deli counter. There is nothing wrong with City Sub. I go there occasionally, but I'm baffled by people who claim it is a GREAT sandwich shop. It is a filling cheap meal, but really nothing special.
Pete Wells, head food critic of the NYTimes is upset City Sub is closed. Heresparkslope getting a lot of traction today on the internet:

jesus people, are you all really THAT uptight that you would fall for such a clear troll attempt by eddard?
I , for one, cant stand the overpriced "gourmet" sandwiches that seem to be so common these days. Give me City Sub, Russos or even better DeFontes any day.
@Eddard thanks for making me look rational
BKLYN Larder is way too expensive and the sandwiches are filling if you're a dead bird.
Been going to City Sub since they opened 28 years ago. Best sub around.
Every change brings many good things with it so I think it will be fine!
I also thing that changes are natural way of development and people should be happy to change and to have more changes in their everyday life!
where is city sub!?!
still missing City Sub. Wish they'd reappear!!
