Community Garden Finally Coming to Fourth and Sackett

It looks like a little more greenery is heading for Fourth Avenue.

DNAinfo is reporting that after neary 20 years of political back-and-forth, a portion of the DEP-owned land on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Sackett Street is slated to be turned into a community garden starting this September.

The Department of Environmental Protection purchased the lot back in the 1980s as part of its still-under-construction Third Water Tunnel, which will connect the city to upstate water sources when it's completed. They won't be patching in Park Slope for another 8-12 years, though, so in the meantime they've set aside some of the space for community gardeners to plant native species, and there will be a tool shed and rainwater collection system as well.

There's a call out for volunteers to help build the garden; those interested can get in touch with Judy Janga at GreenSpace
