The Park Slope Week in Review: 9/5/11 - 9/9/11

On Labor Day I snuck a peek inside Dr. Brendan's Mac Repair shop in advance of its grand opening, and also noticed that the storefront that was home to Slope Sports appeared to be in the process is being dismantled.

Tuesday brought word that the MetLife Home Loans office has opened in the space that was formerly artist Mark Ravitz's art gallery next to the post office on Seventh. I also checked in on the new restaurant Talde, and it looks like they're on schedule for a mid-October opening.

On Thursday Dr. Brendan's Mac Repair shop officially opened, along with the impressive new falafel spot Filfila, on Ninth Street. The hotly anticipated Fleisher's Meats also announced that they'll be opening by the end of the month.

Signage for the Five Guys heading for Park and Flatbush went up on Friday, along with a sign that they'll be opening up this coming Wednesday. A new toy and gift shop called Bubblez popped up on Fifth between Fourth and Fifth Streets as well.

The Park Slope Week in Review: 8/29/11 - 9/2/11

On Monday word got around that due to the windstorm the day before (due to, oh yeah, that hurricane), the steeple at St. Augustine's swayed violently and was in danger of collapse, and a big tree limb was blocking the sidewalk on Fifth near Park Place. Also, the plywood was taken down from the new Five Guys coming to Flatbush Avenue, revealing a shiny glass facade.

Tuesday brought word that the hall of foodie wonders known as Bklyn Larder has applied for an in-house beer and wine license, and that workers had begun converting the space that was last home to Hollywood Video, down on Fifth Ave and Eighth Street, into a Citibank. I was also able to sneak a peek into the soon-to-open restaurant/bar/lounge Prime 6, and it's not looking half bad.

On Wednesday I discovered that Sandy's, the tiny coffee shop on 16th Street near Fifth, had re-opened after being shut down for the past few months, and she happens to sell the best tamales in the neighborhood. Ozzie's also cleared out all trace of it from its home on Seventh Avenue in anticipation of its move across the street, and left behind all the remnants of the space's previous life as a 1920s pharmacy.

Thursday brought the first day of September, along with a veritable sidewalk harvest of vegetables growing out of the ground on the Slope's most edible block, Sterling between Seventh and Flatbush. Signage was also removed from the former Tower Electronics, on Fifth and 13th, revealing some serious hideousness.

With Friday came the good news that our own beloved Soup Man, Chef Richard Gussoff, would be returning to the space he occupied last winter on Seventh near Ninth Street, and will resume selling some of the best soups you'll ever have, in November. There's also a rumor that a slightly less desirable element may also be returning to our neighborhood. But hey, look: St. Augustine's steeple is getting fixed!

The Park Slope Week in Review: 8/8/11 - 8/12/11

On Monday, news broke that a new bar and grill called My Lucky Lou's will be moving into the space last occupied by Kohzee Cafe, on Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street. Their website claims that they're "already attracting critical acclaim, both locally and nationally," even though they haven't even opened yet. Now that's impressive!

I had a chance to check out the new men's and women's clothing boutique called Rivet on Tuesday, which opened last Friday on Seventh near Union. Pricey, but good quality merchandise. Also, Chiles and Chocolate, the Oaxacan restaurant also on Seventh near Union, will be opening up a second outpost soon, in Chelsea.

Walked past De Luxe, the new cafe headed for Seventh Avenue near 14th Street on Wednesday, and it seems to be coming along nicely. The menu is up on their website, as well. Plywood is already up at the space last occupied by Fatoosh on Fifth near Ninth Street, and new Muni-Meters are being installed all throughout the neighborhood to go along with the price hikes.

I took a peek inside the space on Seventh Ave near Eighth Street that will soon be home to the Zito's, the Italian sandwich shop from Crespella's owners on Thursday, and it's looking very impressive. Fresh on Fifth, the teen-centric women's clothing boutique on Fifth between 11th and 12th, also closed up shop.

And on Friday, I published some photos of Top Chef contestant Mark Simmons' new New Zealand-inspired restaurant, Kiwiana, opening next week on Union near Seventh, along with the first photos of the food itself. Also, that hat shop I first told you about a couple weeks ago that's coming to Fifth Avenue near Union has put up some temporary signage

Enjoy the lovely weekend!

The Park Slope Week in Review: 8/1/11 - 8/5/11

On Monday, construction began in earnest at the soon-to-be best butcher shop in Brooklyn, an outpost of the celebrated Fleisher's Meats, opening soon on Fifth near Union. Also, Sushi Tatsu, the Japanese/Thai restaurant on Flatbush near Seventh, shut down.

Tuesday brought word that Purbird, the chicken-centric restaurant on the corner of Sixth and St. Marks, had opened the night before, and their offerings are very photogenic. We also got a peek, courtesy of Zagat, at the menu former Top Chef contestant has in store for his restaurant Kiwiana, coming soon to Union Street.

On Wednesday I noticed that an unauthorized, yet awesome, Mac repair shop named Dr. Brendan is coming to Fifth Avenue in the North Slope. NYC Pet also took it upon themselves to send a little message, via their window, to the big-box Petco that opened last month.

Thursday brought some seriously exciting news for anyone interested in hats: Goorin Brothers, a top of the line hat store, will be opening up next door to Bierkraft pretty soon, and should complement all the vintage shops around there very nicely.

Finally, on Friday longtime North Slope holdout Adelina Nail and Hair Salon was forced out to make way for a higher-paying tenant, for most likely a Barclays-related reason. Also, ever wonder what the biggest steak in the Slope is?

The Park Slope Week in Review: 7/25/11 - 7/29/11

Monday brought news that two Middle Eastern restaurants within a block of one another, the beloved Fatoosh and the... slightly less beloved Pita Pizza Grill (formerly Pita Hut), both near the corner of Fifth Ave and Ninth Street, have closed. The 20-year old Eye Shoppe on Seventh is also expanding, into the space last occupied by Video Forum.

On Tuesday Yes Cleaners began moving a block up Fifth in the North Slope, into the space last occupied by Corduroy Kid. I also got a couple photos of the under-construction Prime Six, whose facade is complete.

On Wednesday word got around that Cobble Grill II, the spectacularly unspectacular burger/salad restaurant on Sixth and 14th, had shuttered after only a couple weeks in business. Construction is also underway at the lot on Sixth near Sterling that had been vacant for the past couple years.

On Thursday I published the first review of Bare Burger, which opened the night before on Seventh and First. It's quite good, and allows us to eat lots of new and exciting animals, like elk. It's been packed every night since opening.

Friday brought word that Culture, everyone's favorite new frozen yogurt place (fro-yo seems like too belittling a term for it), is now offering drinkable low-fat yogurt in four flavors. It also looks like Cozbi, the "handmade goodness"-selling women and children's boutique on Fifth between Fourth and Fifth, will be opening up over the weekend.
