Closed for Business: Sushi Tatsu, 347 Flatbush Avenue

It's become increasingly clear over the past couple years that is you're going to run a restaurant, the mantra to stick by is "Do one thing, and do it well." Case in point: the Meatball Shop, Bark, and opening soon, the chicken-centric Purbird.
If there's one food genre that's been hardest hit by this philosophy, it has to be Asian Fusion. Taro Sushi does Japanese really well, and is a big success. Spice does Thai well, and is a success as well. Places like Tenko and the now-shuttered Sushi Tatsu, which was located on Flatbush between Carlton and Sterling, attempted to do too much by combining both Sushi and Thai cuisine, and never emerged as standouts for that very reason.

Not necessarily true.
Sushi Tatsu has locations in areas that wouldn't necessarily be overrun by sushi joints (Crown Heights and BedStuy are two of their locations.) This, which I believe was their first, was an anomaly in that it did have greater competition. No, it's not as good as Taro or Geido, but I also don't necessarily think its closing is similar to that of Picasso/whatever its name was this week.
I liked Sushi Tatsu more than Geido, which I find overrated. I'm not surprised, however, to see this place close. They did try to do too much, the menu got confusing/weird, but most of all the place had terrible atmosphere. It was dark, depressing, a bit dingy, loud (sometimes with music playing and the TV on at the same time) -- a borderline dump. I'll miss the cheapo lunch special, but everything ends.
