Has Brooklyn Bread Closed Up Shop? (Updated)
Tuesday, June 12, 2025 at 4:09PM
UPDATES BELOW.
Brooklyn Bread, the bakery/cafe on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Sixth Street, appears to have shut down operations.
A couple tipsters have sent word this afternoon that the space is in the process of being gutted. Workers have been hauling out furniture and equipment and the "interior is a disaster," according to one.
Calls to the cafe have gone unanswered, and the lady who answered the phone at the Court Street location wasn't aware of what's going on. Either they're closed or are undergoing a sudden, extensive renovation. My guess is that they're in fact closed for good; stay tuned for confirmation.
UPDATE: Thanks to a tipster for passing along word that the landlord upped the rent, so they'll be moving further south, to Fifth Avenue and 15th Street. No vacant storefronts to speak of on that corner, so it'll be interesting to see how this develops.
UPDATE 2: Brooklyn Bread will in fact be moving into the space currently occupied by Sweet Treasures Bakery, which was formerly Three Star Bakery, on Fifth between 16th and Prospect. They two business will be sharing the space, according to the employee who answered the phone, but the baker, Anthony, declined to provide any more details.

good bread everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief.
I know people spoke well of this place, but it aesthetically looked as unappetizing as can be. Never stepped foot in there.
hmm, I walked by there this afternoon and it did look odd inside..........................
The people who run this place are shady.
And why in the world would you open at 15th and 5th, within blocks of a couple other bakeries? And good bakeries at that.
it seemed like when they remolded a year or so ago, business never recovered.
They were perfectly average and had a lock on business when they first opened-then good bakeries opened around them and they stayed the same. A perfect case of how the market is supposed to work-unfortunately if theyre opening on 5th and 15th they didnt get the memo because theres even more bakeries in that area.
The new (old) bakery on 5th between 16th & Prospect Avenues has a chalk board out front that says they are partnering with Brooklyn Bread, or something to that effect.
What bakery is that?
And, yes, once Brooklyn Bread renovated and stopped having as many cakes and pastries as they used to, they helped to shoot themselves in the foot
Looks like Brooklyn Bread ran into the same streak of bad luck that beset the old Lopez Bakery and the dearly departed Atelier Alfieri: The Bread Project.
Once Du Jour bakery opens, there will be no need for any other bakery.
As much as I wish that every one who does open a business in PS thrives I can't say i regret this closure. For a long time it was the closest bakery to me and I really tried to buy their stuff and like the place. the staff was not interested (except with each other and on their cell phones) and the baked goods were really sub par.
There are more choices now than ever for good bakery stuff on that stretch of 5th ave and wish all the people who have opend and will.. great good luck and I will give you alla try!!
The old Lopez bakery didnt close, they moved to a bigger spot down the block and renamed Boulangerie Lopez-theyre still the best anywhere in the greater Slope area and the nicest people youll ever meet.
Sweet treasures isnt very big-how exactly are they combining?-they seem to already have maxed out their use of the space.
I don't get how they are combining with Sweet Treasures, that is not a big bakery. Also, their styles are very different, I've been to Sweet Treasures, they are sort of old school and good, I have a bad feeling Brooklyn Bread is going to ruin them.
And, IMO, Lopez Bakery which I used to love has gone seriously downhill
Towards the top of the list in my "nostalgia" package for businesses gone bye bye is the Lopez bakery when they opened on 5th ave and 8th Street. They baked all night and though the gate was sometimes half down they would let you in to buy muffins right out of the oven. As their wholesale business developed and the move the charm factor decreased as did the quality of goods. But, when the place was great it was seriously great!
Boulangerie Lopez = amazing rosemary bread and red velvet cupcakes, and very nice people.
I always thought their egg sandwiches were outstanding. Much better than your average bodega version.
But last time I went there earlier this year, their bread selection and baked good selection was much smaller and the cake I bought was awful. Very disappointing considering Lopez used to be my go to bakery. Let's hope some of these new ones are good.
I loved the prosciutto bread at Sweet Treasures!
According to this week's Crains, the business at 384 Fifth Ave. recently filed for bankruptcy. I believe that's the address of the now-shuttered Brooklyn Bread. That probably has something to do with this move.
rent was way to high... causes the prices prices to high... causing no business. NOT EVERY ONE CAN AFFORD PARK SLOPE PRICES.
I BLAME YUPPIES AND HIPS=TERS
....or maybe the quality of the stuff they sold was just bad.
Park Slope is not an inexpensive neighborhood to live in. If someone can't afford it, perhaps they should consider moving somewhere else?
Does anyone know what the asking rent is?
Their bread and other items were HORRIBLE, that's why it closed. Had nothing to do with price.
I agree with dean street, their stuff was awful!
