Buttermilk Bakeshop Coming to 339 7th Avenue

A new bakery is in the works at 339 7th Avenue, in the space between 9th and 10th Streets that was last occupied by a Tasti D-Lite, and it sounds like it's going to be a good one.
Buttermilk Bakeshop will be run by owner/pastry chef Katie Rosenhouse, a French Culinary Institute graduate who's logged hours at restaurants including Le Cirque, Bouley, Country, The Russian Tea Room, Olana, and the David Burke restaurant group. She competed in two episodes of Food Network's Chopped (including the very first one), won $10,000 on the network's Sweet Genius (for which she was later hired as a culinary consultant), and has taught cooking classes for the past couple years.
When the small bakery opens in February, she'll be selling cakes (cranberry carrot cake will be a specialty), cookies, chocolate truffles, six rotating varieties of homemade ice cream, whoopie pies, French macarons, madeleines, rugelach, caramels, and more. Coffee and seasonal drinks including hot chocolate and hot cider will also be available. Baking will be done throughout the day, and a couple months after opening she'll begin selling breakfast pastries and savory items. Because the space is so small and has an open kitchen, it'll be grab-and-go with not much in the way of seating.
There are very few types of businesses that are always welcome, but a bakery selling scratch-made classics made by a professional pastry chef is one of them. I'll be looking forward to February.

I always welcome another bakery but that particular area is pretty saturated with them or with shops that sell baked goods .. Colson, Ladybird, Gather, Meltkraft, Naidres, Cafe Grumpy, Red Horse, Union Market. I wish Katie the best of luck and hope that she finds her niche there.
I'd have to agree with Tortilla. That area has a number of bakeries, that space is very small and doesn't have a ton of foot traffic during the day. Red Horse is my fav and will continue to be-it's a decent sized space and has some pretty delicious stuff.
No foot traffic? It's right next to a subway entrance, it will do well.
Agree the location is not good as there are too many bakeries in that area.
Now that Sweet Melissa has closed the North Slope is in desperate need of a greak bakery similar to Du Jour (what I consider one of the better bakeries in the neighborhood). It's too bad she didn't take one of those available spaces on 7th near Union street, tons of walking traffic and now absolutely not bakery around other than Cousin Johns (which is good for certain things but very old school) or Blue Sky which is excellent but not open very late into the day.
Tricky location. Seems like she's a good TV personality. Let's see how she does on her own
The location is right in the midst of 6 other bakeries as has been pointed out. Colson is great and so is Ladybird and Leske's. South Slope has a plethora of bakeries and it's true that the north part of the neighborhood has very few. I think the north slope NEEDS a new bakery, but have been hoping for Mayson Kaiser to open up. Or a Bien Cuit.
i'm sure spaces are more expensive in north slope, but you also get the advantage of tons more people walking by. The area of 7th Avenue near Union is probably the most people walking around on foot than anywhere in the neighborhood, especially in the summers when people are funneling up to Prospect Park and Grand Army Plaza.
And yes, Du Jour Bakery is the best in the neighborhood, I'd say one of the best in the city. But it's also located close to this new shop.
I gladly walk down to Du Jour once a week, they have an incredible selection that would give any Manhattan bakery a run for its money.
Du jour for the win!
First and foremost, we are flattered by our loyal fans in this wonderful neighborhood. But we'd like to add a few comments to this discussion before it goes any further.
Yes, there are several bakeries in this neighborhood. Some choose to bake from scratch, while others purchase from suppliers. Each has it's own personality, it's own loyal customer base, specific target audience, specialties, and coffee programs. While it may seem like there are many, just take a walk around Cobble Hill/ Carrol Gardens and you will see bakeries that have been around for 50+ years across the street from each other, still thriving. Variety is the spice of life and it's through friendly competition that the bar is raised. It's what makes NYC one of the best cities in the country.
What makes our neighborhood so wonderful is the variety of people, the amount of small businesses that are operated by passionate people sharing what they do best. It's what gives Park Slope its character, and it's really what attracted us here. It's why we chose to plant our roots here, and hopefully, we can grow with the neighborhood.
We know Katie Rosenhouse both professionally and personally and can honestly say that she is not only a supremely talented pastry chef, but a genuinely nice person that has a true passion for her craft. We're happy and excited that she has taken a risk to follow her dreams and shouldn't we, as a community, welcome her? After all, "spread love is the Brooklyn way", right?

i'm sorry but logical, well thought out comments have no place on blogs. please come up with one negative thing to say about the new bakery or keep to yourself.
Obviously if you are friends with someone you'll post only positives. Let's see how her small ex tasti store will do. I have my favorite go to spots and they are places where I have a seat to sit in when I want to drink coffee. It will be interesting to see if anyone gives this place a chance. Tasti failed-it's a weird location for such a small place.
I love you, Du Jour. You are always sweet to me and your baked goods are so delicious.
Sterling, I agree that the Sweet Melissa location would have been a great location for Katie. Sorry to say, I wasn't thrilled with their goods. North Slope needs better bakeries. I'm happy that I live in the South where there are tons!
I give it 6 months ... Rent is to hight
You are forgetting north slope has Brooklyn Larder on Flatbush between 5th and 6th, the chocolate room. delicious
