Closed for Business: Uncle Arthur's Cafe, 237 9th Street
Friday, October 3, 2024 at 9:24AM
Uncle Arthur's Cafe, which opened back in April on Ninth Street just west of Fourth Avenue, has closed. A "Closed for Renovations" sign was posted on the front door, but owner Richard Gussoff confirmed that it won't be re-opening.
The restaurant, which doubled as a cafe during the morning rush, was generally well-reviewed, but its off-the-beaten-path location didn't do it any favors. Gussoff, who has met with great success as the chef behind the popular wintertime pop-up The Soup Bowl on Seventh near Ninth Street, added that his business partner promised to operate the business when Gussoff left mid-October to re-open the Soup Bowl but later reneged, saying that he's "at this time unable to take on this responsibiity."
While it's disappointing that this venture didn't work out for Gussoff, who lives in the neighborhood and has won serious praises for his soups, it's good to know that he'll be opening The Soup Bowl for the winter once again later this month in its regular location at 319 7th Avenue. He's also looking into opening a second location this winter on Smith Street.

It's too bad. :( I don't eat out often, but my husband & I both enjoyed the food the 5 times we went there. Glad that the Soup Bowl will return as his soups are awesome!! :)
I'm not trying to rub salt on the wound but I had the absolute worst meal of my life here. I was shocked they stayed open as long as they did and even more shocked that other people ate something edible here. Incompetent service at a high cost.
Hopefully something different comes to the space
location, location, location
Speaking of closed for business: I think you can probably take down that coupon in the upper right hand corner, for 10% off Zito's Sandwiches 7th Avenue.
Anyone going to report on the reopening of Chocolate Room in their new space? Been open for a while now.
Park slope is too expensive and too difficult to operate in. Cash flow is king and with high rents & seamless /Grubhub monolopoly taking as high as 20% you got to expect this. Grant it even if food was bad /mediocre/ blah blah blah the odds are stacked against them all. Too many restaurants, too many options. The only way it works are if 40% close then the remaining will make it.
It’s normal. Usually only 30% of new food businesses do well.
you can not blame the location; there are plenty of places that exists despite their location because they excel at their food and service quality like they are supposed to.
Too bad. I love his soups and very happy to hear that the Soup Bowl will be back. I wonder how he'd do with just a year round soup place.
