Du Jour Bakery Coming to Perch Cafe Space

A new bakery is coming to 365 Fifth Avenue, between 5th and 6th Streets, in the space that was last occupied by Perch Cafe.

Du Jour Bakery be run by the husband-and-wife duo of TJ and Vera Obias, two incredibly well-established pastry chefs who have quite an impressive resume, logging hours at some of the city's most well-respected restaurants. TJ's been the pastry chef at Morimoto and Gordon Ramsay at the London (he opened both), as well as Cafe Gray and BLT Fish. He met Dale Talde at Morimoto, where they became good friends, and--worth mentioning-- he makes the standout Hawaiian buns for Talde. Dale also introduced TJ to his wife Vera, who was pastry chef at The Russian Tea Room and Cesare Casella's Beppe, opened Dovetail with John Fraser, and currently works at Buddakan.

As I said, two incredibly well-estabished pastry chefs.

So what can we expect? From TJ: "You can expect an eclectic menu filled with classic pastries that we will make in house daily.  Staples like croissant, Danish, and tarts are a given, but we also want to have fun and make the food we love to eat.  At the risk I sounding cliche, we are keeping things seasonal and, when possible, local.  We'll have some savory items in the mix (soups, salads, sandwiches, etc..) and a killer brunch.  Dinner will come later on when we get things settled...we really want to stay focused on our bakery items (we'll have macarons, bonbons, and plenty of desserts), bread will be limited to brioche, some house made buns (similar to the Hawaiian buns I'm making for Talde) for our sandwiches, and Vera's signature almond bread pudding.  The rest of the menu will be revealed as we approach our opening date."

So.. yeah, this is actually a pretty big deal, folks! Construction on the space will begin by the end of the week, and they're hoping for a mid-summer opening. Until then, you can track their progress on Facebook and Twitter.

As long as Mayor Dale approves, then I'm ok with it.

Seriously, sounds like a great pedigree. Good news.

Looks like a nice addition to that end of 5th for sure, while also meeting the Dale Talde quota. All it's missing is a Morimoto and Russian Tea Room pedigreed mission burrito.

Sounds like a great place. Wish them luck, despite the number of bakeries in the area.

Well, you've fulfilled your daily Dale Talde quota for the day.
One wonders when the Stop Dale Talde movement will begin.

Ah, another Talde reference! I'm starting to think you are getting paid to mention them, lol!

So, this isn't really a true bakery? It says they will serve lunch and dinner? So, baked goods will be kind of a side line? A bakery to me is a place that just sells baked goods, this sounds like another restaurant

I just made a creme puff in my pants. That's how good this sounds.

My apologies for this post. Immature and disgusting. In my defense and in the defense of others who are surely about to type in the same post as I, the bakery does sound very good.

@ParkSlopePerson: I might have made the same statement, yet left out the lol. There is an unbridled enthusiasm for Mr. Talde among many in Park Slope and HPS certainly transmits some of that. Not to mention that the press and bloggers are often comped at soft openings and friends and family events. Easy to understand how that enthusiasm might be stoked. And, I remind myself, bloggers aren't journalists and don't need to represent themselves as impartial.

thanks, I'm disappointed to see this isn't a true bakery

I think a place where a guy literally makes a cream puff in a giant pair of pants would do well. We finally found what should go in the Sette space.

This is exquisite news! Other than Colson and Almondine Park Slope does not really have any good bakeries.

Please focus on the bakery aspect of this operation.

To those upset with it not going "full bakery"...terminology aside, I'm glad it won't be just a bakery, it would have been a relatively big spot to just sell pastries out of. And t heir outdoor section was nice to hang out in and eat.

Besides, I want another brunch place to replace the hole Perch left in my bird embroidered heart.

eh, to each their own, personally, I think we could use a pastry shop/bakery as opposed to another restaurant, which is what this is going to be. But, glad it's not another empty storefront

Great news. I am super excited.
