Open for Business: Backyard, 388 Fifth Avenue

Backyard, the restaurant that's replacing Kappa Sake House on Fifth Avenue between Sixth and Seventh Streets, officially opened for business last weekend, right on schedule.

While I haven't been able to take a look at a menu yet, owner Jeff Warner, who runs the restaurant with his wife Elizabeth, told me that it'll be "simple home cooking, using fresh ingredients," mostly salads, sandwiches, and flatbread pizzas (including one topped with fig and bleu cheese with caramelized onions and balsamic reduction). There's also a small bar, but the focal point is the spacious back yard, which Jeff hopes will be a place where folks can come and relax, and treat it like it's their own.

As an opening promotion, they're offering a free glass of pink champagne to those who drop in to say hello, and are also offering $5 beer and $7 wine.

Backyard, 388 Fifth Avenue Brooklyn NY 11215.

Saw the menu and was disappointed, didn't look I would go out of my way to eat there. Maybe I'll be swayed a different way later.

Here is the website:

It is still largely "under construction".

Sorry, but the fake reviews on Yelp are a real turnoff.

I see we're going with the very neutral "Joe" now. :)

Try the place. Yelp will be Yelp.

Exactly. Give them some time...

Yelpers Gonna Yelp.

This is not Yelpers being Yelpers. This is the owner or his proxy being dishonest. It might be a great place, who knows. I'm just saying that it is a turnoff. I'd be nice if the enthusiasim being shown on Yelp was geniune instead of fake and orchestrated by someone with an agenda.

Personally, and I'm big on restaurant research and reviews in general, I take every yelp review with a grain of salt, and won't even check the initial impressions until a place has been up and running for a couple months. I didn't even check the Yelp page, so I can't disagree with you. My point is that it's so early that I wouldn't even check, let alone give the early reviews any credence.
