Hungry Ghost Coffee Bar & Cafe Coming to 253 Flatbush Ave

A new cafe is in the works in the large space that was last home to New York Naturals, on the northeast corner of Sixth and Flatbush Avenues. Called Hungry Ghost, it comes from the owner of Prospect Perk, the tiny cafe further up the avenue, and will feature Stumptown Coffee and baked goods from local favorite Little Buddy Biscuit Company, which had been looking for a new home since their Fifth Avenue shop closed a little over a year ago.

The owner, Istanbul native Murat Uyaroglu, took some time to fill me in on what else we can expect. "We want to be a great local coffee shop, a place to grab some coffee on your way to the subway, or a place to meet up with friends for lunch or dinner," he said. "It will be a little more upscale than Prospect Perk, with a full bakery in-house and lots of room to sit."

The simple menu will feature 10-15 varieties of sandwiches, along with soups, salads, and baked goods from Little Buddy, who's owner/head baker will also be head chef.

Over time, Murat hopes to add beer and wine to the menu, and have special events like comedy nights. He hopes to soft-open by late March.

I think we've proven you can never have too many coffee shops in this neighborhood, as long as the coffee is good.

There's actually zero solid coffee in that direction, which happens to be the direction I often walk to for work. I'm not huge on Prospect Perk, but Stumptown's definitely an upgrade from the Equal Exchange beans they use at PP. This is going to work very well if they know what they're brewing.

Stumptown coffee is amazing ( I just tried it for the first time at The Vanderbilt). I'm exited about this place. I also like the name Uyaroglu chose.

The issue becomes what do they do with the Stumptown beans. The beans itself don't make for great coffee. Yes, they'll get me through the door. Absolutely.

Notice the difference between Noella's coffee and, say, Venticinque. Both use Counter Culture beans. I think Noella does a very good job while I tend to find Venticinque pretty subpar.

Still stoked about real coffee on that end of Flatbush.

Noella Brew bar has turned out to be an unexpected great spot with great coffee. Very nice place with friendly staff and delicious coffee.

This place sounds great too.

So excited to hear about the return of Little Buddy!

Like I said in another thread, while Noella hasn't stopped me from going to Gorilla, they've all but completely taken me away from Cafe Regular du Nord.

It just feels like some bad juju that was at Ozzie's was freed. Noella is everything Ozzie's wasn't.

Cafe du nord is better than ever now that it's not overly crowded every moment of the day. Now it's like a normal coffee shop (always really clean and barista's friendly) and not inundated with people and strollers 24/7. it's really quite a lovely spot now that some of the overflow has gone to Noella. du nord is just too small to take all of the people looking for a good coffee shop in that immediate area of park slope/7th avenue.

it's nice to have options.

i really can't imagine a neighborhood with so many great coffee shops, to be honest. it would be fun to try to list them all but i'm sure i'd forget so many...let's try to piece them together:

noella brew bar
cafe regular du nord
cafe grumpy
cafe regular
kos kaffe
gorilla
venticinque
konditori 5th
konditori 7th
root hill
de luxe
teal lounge
naidres
crespella
cafe martin
connecticut muffin
coleur cafe

there are more but my brain is dead...

Don't forget Blue Sky!

February 6, 2025 | Unregistered CommenterCA

yes, blue sky!

and southside!

The problem with du Nord isn't just the tiny space. The service has always been abysmal. Completely kills the fact that their coffee still may be slightly better.

For a second there, I thought we'd have Blue Bottle at the Flea every weekend, but I only saw Crop to Cup there this weekend. Blue Bottle somewhere in the nabe would be the cherry on top of coffee awesomeness.

If I had to rank the Slope coffeeshops, I'd say:

1. Cafe Grumpy
2. Cafe Martin
3. Noella
4. Gorilla
5. Du Nord

oh it's funny i realized i forgot starbucks. ha. so much for a place like that limiting other coffee shops in the neighborhood. they are so insignificant, in my mind i forgot about them.
your list is similar to mine, but i have to rank southside along with grumpy for the best coffee. then cafe martin, then du nord, noella and gorilla would be be ranking. pretty similar to you, park place. oh, root hill is really great too i just don't make it there as often.

Well, if Stumptown still has the same rules, anyone who brews their beans has to go through the Stumptown training and one person on staff has to take continuing ed from Stumptown as long as they are using Stumptown product.
